Obesity, caused by an excess adipose tissue, is one of the biggest health-threats of the 21 century. Adipose tissue expansion occurs through two processes: (i) hypertrophy, and (ii) hyperplasia, the formation of new adipocytes, also termed adipogenesis. Recently, serum amyloid A3 (Saa3) has been implicated in adipogenesis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Saa3 on adipogenesis using both an in vitro and in vivo murine model. Saa3 gene silenced pre-adipocytes ha a lower expression of pro-adipogenic markers and less lipid accumulation, indicating impaired adipogenesis. Furthermore, male NUDE mice, injected with Saa3 gene silenced pre-adipocytes developed smaller fat pads with smaller adipocytes and lower expression of pro-adipogenic markers than their control counterparts. This confirms that Saa3 gene silencing indeed impairs adipogenesis, both in vitro and in vivo. These results indicate a clear role for Saa3 in adipogenesis and open new perspectives in the battle against obesity.

Area Covered: We performed a critical analysis of patent literature from January 2016 to January 2025 on topo II inhibitors in oncology using the online databases Espacenet, Wipo, and Google patent.
Expert Opinion: Substantial progress in the development of novel topo II inhibitors through synthetic chemistry, natural product isolation, molecular modification, and in silico screening was recorded.

Although cold atmospheric plasma is a promising therapeutic technique for tumor immunotherapy via reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), the challenges associated with the generation and delivery of these RONS hamper clinical adoption. Herein, a dual-mode hybrid discharge plasma-activated sodium alginate hydrosols (PAH) is proposed to enhance the antitumor immune response. Gaseous highly reactive RONS are generated by dual-mode hybrid plasma produced by mixed O and NO modes, which are converted into aqueous RONS in PAH via gas-liquid reactions between plasma and hydrosols.

Circulating levels of 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropionic acid (CMPF), a metabolite derived from dietary furan fatty acids primarily found in marine food sources, have long been recognized as biomarkers for fish intake. However, elevated CMPF levels are also observed in patients with type 2 diabetes or chronic kidney disease and in healthy people associated with a reduced infection risk, suggesting potential bioactive roles in metabolism and immune function. Yet, the possible causal mechanisms behind these associations are unknown.
