There are no proven therapies for metastatic or unresectable Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma (ChRCC). ChRCC is characterized by high glutathione levels and hypersensitivity to ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death characterized by peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The underlying mechanisms leading to ferroptosis hypersensitivity are unknown.

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC) is the third most common subtype of kidney cancer, with limited therapeutic options. Using BH3 profiling to screen ChRCC-derived cell lines, we discovered that BH3 peptides targeting BCL-xL promote apoptosis in ChRCC. Downregulation of BCL2L1 is sufficient to induce apoptosis in ChRCC-derived cells, consistent with our screening results.

Purpose: While immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) has transformed the management of many advanced renal cell carcinomas (RCCs), the determinants of effective antitumor immunity for chromophobe RCC (ChRCC) and renal oncocytic tumors remain an unmet clinical and scientific need.

Methods: Single-cell transcriptomic and T-cell receptor profiling was performed on tumor and adjacent normal tissue of patients with ChRCC and renal oncocytic neoplasms. Using machine learning, the cellular origin of renal oncocytic neoplasms was evaluated, with analysis of associated oncogenic pathways.

Purpose: Prolonged postoperative ileus (PPOI) is associated with a lengthy hospital stay, risk of additional complications and substantial costs. Data regarding the incidence of PPOI following right extended colectomy (REC) with ileo-descending anastomosis is limited. This study aimed to compare the incidence of PPOI and evaluate risk factors for this condition among patients undergoing REC, left hemicolectomy (LC), and right hemicolectomy (RC) for colon carcinoma.

Background: Modernly, abdominal surgery has shifted to minimally invasive techniques with an inclination towards fewer incisions. This has made intra-abdominal retraction more challenging. Despite development in retracting instrumentation for solid organs, the mobilization of the bowel remains challenging due to its friable nature.

Hiatal hernia (HH) is a common disorder of the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract that general surgeons encounter. Giant paraesophageal is a subtype of HH in which more than 30% of the stomach is located in the chest. It can cause symptoms such as dysphagia, UGI bleeding, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and vomiting.

Article Synopsis
  • - Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) stems from mutations in TSC1 or TSC2, resulting in overactivity of the mTORC1 pathway and causing multiple organ lesions, primarily affecting the lungs and kidneys.
  • - Research indicates that TFEB, a protein linked to TSC, plays a crucial role in kidney disease; knocking out TFEB improves kidney health and survival in mouse models of TSC.
  • - The study suggests that the effects of Rapamycin, a treatment for TSC, rely on TFEB and that the understanding of mTORC1 activity in TSC is evolving, potentially opening new therapeutic options.

Background: Achalasia is a rare disorder of the esophagus characterized by motor dysfunction in the esophagus and relaxation failure of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Currently, surgical myotomy procedures are considered the standard of care. Robotic Heller's myotomy (RHM) with fundoplication has been gaining popularity due to documented advantages in the precision of myotomy as well as avoiding the potential reflux following per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition, resulting from the loss of the anti-reflux barrier. Laparoscopic fundoplication is the surgical procedure of choice for treatment of GERD; however, there remains a debate on the exact mechanism through which it prevents reflux.

Objectives: Our aim was to understand the relationship between reflux, fundoplication, and the angle of His on an experimental model.

Background: To date, there has been a dearth of research on health literacy in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and in particular Lebanon.

Objectives: This cross-sectional study assessed the levels and correlates of health literacy in Lebanese adults.

Methods: A total of 587 participants (54.

Background: Emergency laparotomy (EL) is an increasingly common procedure in the elderly. Factors associated with mortality in the subpopulation of frail patients have not been thoroughly investigated. Sarcopenia has been investigated as a surrogate for frailty and poor prognosis.
