This study aimed to develop and evaluate deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) models with Grad-CAM visualization for the automated classification with interpretability of tongue conditions-specifically glossitis and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)-using clinical tongue photographs, with a focus on their potential for early detection and telemedicine-based diagnostics. A total of 652 tongue images were categorized into normal control (n = 294), glossitis (n = 340), and OSCC (n = 17). Four pretrained DCNN architectures (VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, ResNet152) were fine-tuned using transfer learning.

Pediatric nephrotic syndrome is a clinical condition characterized by severe proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia, and generalized edema, most commonly affecting children aged 2 and 6 years. Although standard oral steroid therapy is effective in managing most cases, relapses are common during childhood. Nephrotic syndrome presents significant challenges due to frequent relapses and the potential side effects of long-term drug therapy.

We isolated 6,561 strains from food animals, cattle ( = 217), pigs (= 1526), chickens ( = 3942), and ducks ( = 876). Isolates were evaluated for antimicrobial sensitivity, mutations in quinolone resistance determination regions (QRDRs), and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes. Clonal relationship and genetic diversity were assessed by multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).

Age-related alterations in the skeletal system are linked to decreased bone mass, a reduction in bone strength and density, and an increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Therapeutics are desired to stimulate bone regeneration and restore imbalance in the bone remodeling process. Quercetin (Qu), a naturally occurring flavonoid, induces osteogenesis; however, its solubility, stability, and bioavailability limit its therapeutic use.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacterial contamination of meat poses a significant global public health risk. We aimed to determine antimicrobial resistance profiles and trends of recovered from carcasses of healthy food-producing animals in South Korea during 2010-2023. In total, 4748 isolates obtained from cattle ( = 1582), pigs ( = 1572), and chickens ( = 1594) were assessed for susceptibility to 12 antimicrobials.

Objectives: The oral microbiome plays an important role in the development and progression of periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to compare microbial profiles of oral cavities in good health, with gingivitis, and in a state of periodontitis, and to identify novel pathogens involved in periodontal diseases.

Methods: One hundred and two participants, including 33 healthy controls, 41 patients with gingivitis, and 28 patients with periodontitis, were included in this cross-sectional study.

A food exchange list is a tool developed to help diabetic patients control their energy intake and plan balanced meals. Korean food exchange lists were first developed in 1988, revised in 1995, and updated again in 2010. With rapidly changing dietary habits and increasing demand for diverse food cultures, the Korean Diabetes Association in cooperation with 4 related organizations established a Task Force Team (TFT) to revise food exchange lists in March 2022.

To assess the response to monocular occlusion test in basic type intermittent exotropia (IXT) and to evaluate the surgical outcomes of titrated surgery based on the test's result. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for patients who underwent bilateral lateral rectus recession for basic type IXT. Patients were categorized into two groups: those who underwent a preoperative diagnostic monocular occlusion test (occlusion group) and those who did not (no occlusion group).

The upper head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) is known to insert into the capsule of the temporomandibular joint and articular disc, and therefore its relationship with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has been consistently suggested. The aim of the study was to determine the anatomical features of the LPM using ultrasonographic (US) imaging. Around 120 hemifaces from 60 healthy Korean volunteers were included in this study.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is closely associated with the development and chronicity of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Given the intricate pathophysiology of both OSA and TMD, comprehensive diagnostic approaches are crucial. This study aimed to develop an automatic prediction model utilizing multimodal data to diagnose OSA among TMD patients.

This study investigated the usefulness of deep learning-based automatic detection of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) effusion using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with temporomandibular disorder and whether the diagnostic accuracy of the model improved when patients' clinical information was provided in addition to MRI images. The sagittal MR images of 2948 TMJs were collected from 1017 women and 457 men (mean age 37.19 ± 18.

Quercetin (QC), a naturally occurring bioflavonoid found in various fruits and vegetables, possesses many potential health benefits, primarily attributed to its robust antioxidant properties. The generation of oxidative stress in bone cells is a key modulator of their physiological behavior. Moreover, oxidative stress status influences the pathophysiology of mineralized tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed the increasing prevalence of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in South Korea from 2010 to 2022 using nationwide health data and climate records.
  • TMD cases rose from 0.48% to 0.94% of the population, with a significant female predominance after age 10 and the highest rates in individuals in their 20s.
  • The study found a positive correlation between temperature differences and TMD prevalence, particularly stronger in winter, indicating that greater temperature fluctuations may lead to higher patient counts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares oral health conditions and serological characteristics of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) against healthy controls, highlighting significant differences, particularly in the prevalence of periodontal diseases and xerostomia.
  • Participants included 161 individuals divided into normal, OA, and RA groups, with RA further categorized into seronegative (snRA) and seropositive (spRA) subtypes.
  • Key findings show OA patients had a 100% prevalence of periodontal disease, while RA patients showed a high occurrence of xerostomia (84.5%), indicating distinct oral health issues between the two arthritis types and their relationship to diagnosis.

Fascial space abscess is a condition in which infections spread into fascial spaces. It is a severe and life-threatening disease unless treated at an early stage. Due to the similarity of clinical symptoms, fascial space abscesses in the orofacial area are often disguised as other diseases, such as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
