Background: Rapid on-site nucleic acid testing plays a critical role in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. Although real-time fluorescence polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, as the gold standard method, is widely used for nucleic acid quantification, its reliance on complex instrumentation and trained personnel in centralized laboratories presents significant challenges in applications such as rapid home-based self-testing or screening in remote areas. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop miniaturized, low-cost, user-friendly, and high-performance point-of-care testing (POCT) devices for nucleic acid detection to meet the demands of infectious pathogen screening in resource-limited settings.

The spread of infectious diseases can be controlled by early identification of the source of infection and timely diagnosis to stop transmission. Real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the current gold standard for pathogen diagnosis, with high detection sensitivity and accuracy. However, due to the need for specialized equipment, laboratories, and personnel, it is difficult to achieve rapid and immediate diagnosis during large-scale infectious disease outbreaks.

Background: Aerobic exercise training can promote the recovery of learning and memory ability in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the specific mechanism is still unclear. Previous studies have suggested that aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-mediated glymphatic system is an important way to clear β-amyloid (Aβ) in the brain, which is closely related to learning and memory impairment in AD. However, it remains unclear whether AQP4 regulates glymphatic clearance of Aβ which contributes to the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise in AD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cancer treatment that relies on the generation of singlet oxygen (O), with its effectiveness linked to the singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ), which has measurement challenges due to poor signal-to-noise ratios and strict excitation wavelength requirements of existing methods.
  • The study introduces a novel approach to measure Φ using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent, which can be oxidized by singlet oxygen, allowing for a straightforward analysis through absorption spectrum changes without the need for additional chemical probes.
  • This new method simplifies the measurement of Φ and enhances accuracy, paving the way for broader applications in the evaluation of various photosensitizers, thereby advancing research in cancer treatment technologies

Although income and living conditions of residents have greatly improved in recent years, people's subjective well-being does not seem to increase daily. This study aimed to explore income, self-rated health, and psychological capital on subjective well-being, using data from the China General Social Survey conducted in 2017. A total of 1136 elderly as subsamples data were selected from 12 582 participants, involving general sociodemographic characteristics, income, self-rated health, psychological capital, and subjective well-being.

The expression of polysialic acid (polySia) on the neuronal cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is called NCAM-polysialylation, which is strongly related to the migration and invasion of tumor cells and aggressive clinical status. Thus, it is important to select a proper drug to block tumor cell migration during clinical treatment. In this study, we proposed that lactoferrin (LFcinB11) may be a better candidate for inhibiting NCAM polysialylation when compared with CMP and low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH), which were determined based on our NMR studies.

Purpose: Current interpersonal sensitivity among college students is easily linked to mood disorders such as anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. This study aims to examine the mediating role of psychological capital and its dimensions in the relationship between interpersonal sensitivity and depressive symptoms among undergraduates.

Methods: The cross-sectional survey was conducted by using cluster stratified random sampling method across six Chinese universities between November and December 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on understanding brain changes that occur before individuals develop mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a key warning sign of dementia.
  • Researchers compared two groups of older adults: those with progressive normal cognition (pNC) at risk for MCI and those with stable normal cognition (sNC), examining their brain structure and function through MRI.
  • Findings revealed that the pNC group had reduced gray matter in specific brain areas and increased functional connectivity related to dopamine and noradrenaline, suggesting measurable brain changes could help identify those at risk for MCI.

Objectives: Deficits in verbal working memory (VWM) observed in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children can persist into adulthood. Although previous studies have identified brain regions that are activated during VWM tasks, the neural mechanisms underlying the relationship between VWM deficits remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the structural covariance network connectivity and brain morphology changes that are associated with VWM performance in ADHD children.

Background: Structural variations (SVs) in individual genomes are major determinants of complex traits, including adaptability to environmental variables. The Mongolian and Hainan cattle breeds in East Asia are of taurine and indicine origins that have evolved to adapt to cold and hot environments, respectively. However, few studies have investigated SVs in East Asian cattle genomes and their roles in environmental adaptation, and little is known about adaptively introgressed SVs in East Asian cattle.

We have developed a high-precision thermometry strategy based on I-I (I) and S-I (I) transitions of Er, after replacing the measurement of the I-I (I) transition with the S-I transition, i.e., using visible light for detection instead of infrared.

Ratiometric optical thermometry based on upconversion (UC) luminescence with different multi-photon processes in CaWO:Tm,Yb phosphor was developed. A new fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry, utilizing the ratio of the cube of F emission to the square of G emission of Tm and retaining the feature of anti-interference of excitation light source fluctuations, is proposed. Under the hypotheses of the UC terms being neglected in the rate equations and the ratio of the cube of H emission to the square of G emission of Tm being a constant in a relatively narrow temperature range, the new FIR thermometry is valid.
