Aim: To determine whether metabolic syndrome (MS), insulin resistance (IR), myocardial enzymes, and kidney function are related to the normal-range of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and their ratio in Chinese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Methods: The research, a secondary analysis of the Acupuncture and Clomiphene for Chinese Women with PCOS trial (PCOSAct), enrolled 922 participants with less than 40 U/L of AST and ALT. Linear regression and trend analyses were used to analyze the relationship between AST, ALT, AST/ALT ratio and anthropometric and metabolic characteristics.

Rubber-derived pollutants, such as tire wear particles (TWP) and latex particles (LAP), pose increasing threats to aquatic ecosystems due to their complex chemical composition and potential toxicity. This study systematically evaluated the embryotoxicity of 30-day leachates from TWP and LAP (10 g/L) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) by integrating chemical characterization and toxicological assessment. ICP-MS and GC-MS analyses revealed elevated levels of toxic metals, notably zinc and aluminum that exceeded established ambient water quality criteria for aquatic life, along with numerous organic contaminants including antioxidants, plasticizers, and accelerators.

Tire wear particles (TWPs) from vehicles have emerged as significant sources of environmental microplastics, releasing hazardous metals and organic contaminants into aquatic ecosystems. However, the differential toxicological effects of TWPs originating from heavy-duty vehicle tire wear particles (HTWPs) versus light-duty vehicle tire wear particles (LTWPs) remain inadequately characterized. Here, we comprehensively evaluated physiological responses, gut microbiota alterations, and liver transcriptomic changes in zebrafish exposed to HTWPs and LTWPs.

The epithelium-off (epi-off) procedure, the gold standard for treating corneal ectasia, avoids corneal transplantation but can cause pain and delayed healing. In contrast, trans-epithelial therapy preserves the epithelium but suffers from limited riboflavin penetration, reducing its efficacy.

Using the framework of Floquet-Bloch theory, we explore linear modes in commensurate and incommensurate lattice configurations, revealing distinct localization characteristics influenced by the lattice twist angle and dispersion coefficient. Numerical simulations confirm that gap solitons can emerge in a self-focusing Kerr medium, originating from nonlinear evolution of localized linear Bloch modes.

Macrophages play a crucial role in myopic changes; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In the present work, we utilized a mouse lens-induced myopia (LIM) model to elucidate the role of macrophages in myopic scleral remodeling through the release of macrophage extracellular traps (METs).

Tire wear particles (TWPs), as a pervasive environmental pollutant, pose significant risks to aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the effects of small (HS) and large (HL) TWPs produced by heavy vehicles on zebrafish, focusing on physiological, microbial, and transcriptomic levels, as well as their intergenerational consequences, under short-term (15 days) and long-term (90 days) exposure. Short-term exposure to small particles (HS15) significantly reduced body width and triggered widespread oxidative stress, while long-term exposure to large particles (HL90) increased gut weight and decreased gill weight, reflecting respiratory and digestive disruptions.

However, the spatial organization of functional connectivity (FC) variability across the human connectome edges and its significance in cognitive development remain unclear. Here, we identified a connectional axis in the edge-level FC variability.

This study investigates the size-dependent ecotoxicological responses of zebrafish (Danio rerio) to TWP exposure, focusing on physiological, metabolic, and microbial community impacts over a 15-day exposure period followed by a 15-day excretion period. Through integrated analysis of gut microbiome composition, liver transcriptomics, and host physiological markers, we found that smaller TWP particles (< 120 μm) induced oxidative stress, evidenced by increased SOD and MDA levels, and inhibited growth by reducing body mass and gut length.

Background: Postpartum psychiatric disorders (PPDs) have been deemed as a significant public health concern, affecting both maternal health and family dynamics. This study aimed to examine the current status of PPDs, identify the potential risk factors of PPDs, and further develop a clinical nomogram model for predicting PPDs in Chinese women.
Method: In this retrospective cohort study, 1418 postpartum women attending the routine postpartum examination at the 42nd day after delivery in Jiangsu Women and Children Health Hospital were recruited as participants from December 2020 to December 2022.
Background: The use of near-infrared lasers for transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) offers a non-invasive method for influencing brain activity and is beneficial for various neurological conditions. However, comprehensive quantitative studies on its safety are lacking.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the safety of 1064-nm laser-based tPBM across brain structure, brain function, neural damage, cognitive ability and tolerance.
Background: The spatial layout of large-scale functional brain networks exhibits considerable inter-individual variability, especially in the association cortex. Research has demonstrated a link between early socioeconomic status (SES) and variations in both brain structure and function, which are further associated with cognitive and mental health outcomes. However, the extent to which SES is associated with individual differences in personalized functional network topography during childhood remains largely unexplored.

Purpose: To develop a short form of Chinese ULV-VFQ-50 based on the ULV-VFQ-150 and compare the psychometrical properties of the two questionnaires.
Methods: We selected candidate items from the ULV-VFQ-150, considering the item response among ultra-low vision (ULV) participants, the even distribution of item measures, visual aspects, and visual domains, to construct a 50-item ULV-VFQ-50 questionnaire. Then, ULV participants were recruited to evaluate its psychometric characteristics by using Rasch analysis.
Microplastics (MPs), diminutive yet ubiquitous fragments arising from the degradation of plastic waste, pervade environmental matrices, posing substantial risks to ecological systems and trophic dynamics. This review meticulously examines the origins, distribution, and biological impacts of MPs, with an incisive focus on elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning their toxicity. We highlight the indispensable role of microbial consortia and enzymatic pathways in the oxidative degradation of MPs, offering insights into enhanced biodegradation processes facilitated by innovative pretreatment methodologies.
