Bleb fibrosis remains the most common reason for glaucoma surgery failure. Although mitomycin C (MMC) is often used to inhibit fibrosis during glaucoma drainage device (GDD) implantation, the effective reaction time of anti-fibrosis could not cover the dynamic process of wound healing. To enable noninvasive dynamic ocular drug release, we fabricated MMC-loaded thermos-responsive fiber membranes using polylactic acid (PLA) and tributyl citrate as a plasticizer.

Thyroid function differs between the oldest-old and younger adults, however, there is a lack of appropriate RIs for the serum FT4, T4, FT3, T3, and TSH concentrations for the oldest-old. A total of 349 people was selected from the natural longevity cohort of Guangxi residents over 90 years old. The distributions of serum FT4, T4, FT3, T3, and TSH concentrations and the FT3/FT4 ratio were also analyzed.

Aging is associated with increased retinal cell apoptosis, which contributes to decreases in retinal function. Apoptotic retinal cell clearance relies on microglial efferocytosis, but the impact of aging on this process has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to shed light on this by using single-cell RNA sequencing (sc-RNA-seq) to compare young and aged mouse retinal transcriptional profiles, in which 74,412 retinal cells from young and aged mice were classified into 10 transcriptionally distinct retinal cell types, and differentially expressed genes between young versus aged retinas were mainly associated with cellular senescence and apoptosis.

As effectors of interactions between genes and the environment, plasma proteins can monitor homeostasis and reflect the aging state of an organism. However, biomarkers of aging that are associated with homeostasis are still unclear. This study investigates the phenotype-related plasma proteome profiles of healthy individuals and to identify proteins that are specifically related to aging and physiological indices and their expression patterns across the lifespan.

Excessive fibrosis is the primary factor for the failure of glaucoma drainage device (GDD) implantation. Thus, strategies to suppress scar formation in GDD implantation are crucial. Although it is known that in implanted medical devices, microscale modification of the implant surface can modulate cell behavior and reduce the incidence of fibrosis, in the field of ophthalmic implants, especially the modification and effects of hydrogel micropatterns have rarely been reported.

Increased entropy is a common cause of disease and aging. Lifespan entropy is the overall increase in disorder caused by a person over their lifetime. Aging leads to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage the antioxidant system and disrupt redox balance.

OPTN (E50K) mutation is one of the significant pathogenic mutations in normal tension glaucoma (NTG). The molecular mechanism of NTG optic nerve injury is complex and diverse; its key mechanism is still unclear. The NLR family pyrin domain containing (NLRP3) inflammasome plays an essential role in the occurrence and development of inflammation.

Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheet (h-BNNS), a structural analogue of graphene, possesses remarkable properties such as exceptional electrical insulation, great resistance to corrosion, excellent mechanical strength, and thermal conductivity. Nonetheless, its continued development is still hampered by the lack of a preparation technique with an easy-to-follow procedure and reliable composition and structure control. In this study, we investigated a two-step protocol for uniform size production of thin-layered h-BNNS.

Background: Inner Mongolia cashmere goat (IMCG), renowned for its superior cashmere quality, is a Chinese indigenous goat breed that has been developed through natural and artificial selection over a long period. However, recently, the genetic resources of IMCGs have been significantly threatened by the introduction of cosmopolitan goat breeds and the absence of adequate breed protection systems.

Results: In order to assess the conservation effectiveness of IMCGs and efficiently preserve and utilize the purebred germplasm resources, this study analyzed the genetic diversity, kinship, family structure, and inbreeding of IMCGs utilizing resequencing data from 225 randomly selected individuals analyzed using the Plink (v.

Triphenylphosphine functionalized carbon dots (TPP-CDs) showcase robust mitochondria targeting capacity owing to their positive electrical properties. However, TPP-CDs typically involve complicated synthesis steps and time-consuming postmodification procedures. Especially, the one-step target-oriented synthesis of TPP-CDs and the regulation of TPP linkage modes remain challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of a combined eye surgery (phacoemulsification, goniosynechialysis, and goniotomy) for treating primary angle closure glaucoma in patients with cataracts, noting that success is not influenced by the severity of peripheral anterior synechiae.
  • It involved 304 eyes from 283 patients over around 12.5 months, showing a significant reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP) post-surgery across all severity groups, with no notable differences in success rates.
  • Although more severe peripheral anterior synechiae (270°≤PAS<360°) experienced increased instances of complications like hyphema, the overall results indicated that the combined procedure is effective regardless of PAS extent

This study aimed to investigate the impact of different pre-heating temperatures (ranging from 40 °C to 80 °C) on the interactions between soy protein isolate (SPI) and catechin to effectively control catechin encapsulation efficiency and optimize the emulsifying properties of soy protein isolate. Results showed that optimal heat treatment at 70 °C improved catechin encapsulation efficiency up to 93.71 ± 0.

Introduction: Glaucoma is a prevalent cause of irreversible vision impairment, characterized by progressive retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) loss, with no currently available effective treatment. Rapamycin (RAPA), an autophagy inducer, has been reported to treat glaucoma in rodent models by promoting RGC survival, but its limited water solubility, systemic toxicity, and pre-treatment requirements hinder its potential clinical applications.

Methods: Chitosan (CS)-RAPA carbon dot (CRCD) was synthesized via hydrothermal carbonization of CS and RAPA and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance.

Suppression of vascular cell senescence is of great significance in preventing cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis. The oxidative stress damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) can lead to cellular senescence. Rapamycin (Rapa) is well known to suppress cell senescence via mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway.
