This study aims to employ molecular dynamics (MD) methods to predict the miscibility and molecular interactions between loratadine (LOR) and polymers, thereby designing drug formulations with enhanced water solubility. The research seeks to improve formulation design efficiency and accelerate the drug development process. A viable approach to enhance the solubility of poorly soluble drugs involves creating solid dispersions (SDs) with hydrophilic polymers.

Frequent escalator-related incidents in subway stations have prompted the authorities to promote the use of public stairs. In daily life, however, pedestrians instinctively prefer to take escalators rather than use stairs. How to better induce pedestrians to choose stairs? It is necessary to reveal the internal mechanism of pedestrian choice.

Protein kinases play important roles in regulating the response to various abiotic stress in plants, of which Calcineurin B-like protein-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs) are important components of Ca signaling pathway under abiotic stress. Here we characterized an abiotic stress-induced CIPK gene (MsCIPK4) from alfalfa (Medicago sativa), which was predominantly expressed in the roots. The deduced MsCIPK4 protein encodes 410 amino acids, and contains four conserved domains (e.

Background: Hepatorenal syndrome-acute kidney injury (HRS-AKI) is a life-threatening complication in decompensated cirrhosis with limited predictive tools for short-term prognosis. Traditional models such as MELD, MELD-Na and Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) have notable limitations in this population.

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic performance of the newly developed MELD 3.

Bacterial infection is a significant risk factor in the onset and development of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). Although early broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment is recommended, the optimal time to initiate antibiotic therapy remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the timing of antibiotic treatment and the prognosis of ACLF patients with bacterial infection.

Background: Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa) share several similarities, including androgen dependency and parallel increases in prevalence with age. Although PCa lags by 15-20 years, no causal association has been identified between BPH and PCa. To investigate the potential causal links between BPH and PCa, this study was performed in a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design.

Objective: Perclose ProGlide closure devices (PPCDs) have become a more commonly used strategy in veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) decannulation, but there is still uncertainty regarding their efficacy and safety compared to surgical removal (SR). Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to compare the application results of the two methods in VA-ECMO decannulation.

Methods: Data from PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases were systematically searched through May 2024.

The presence of significant liver inflammation is an important indication for antiviral therapy in immune-tolerant (IT)phase with chronic hepatitis B(CHB) patients. This study aims to establish a non-invasive model to assess significant liver inflammation in the IT-phase of CHB patients. This multicenter retrospective study included a total of 535 IT-phase CHB patients who underwent liver biopsy, and were randomly divided into a training and a validation set.

Background: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) represents a critical complications of end-stage liver disease, serving as an independent predictor of mortality among patients with cirrhosis. Despite effective treatment with rifaximin, some patients with HE still progress to recurrent episodes, posing a significant therapeutic challenge. Recurrent HE is defined as experiencing two or more episodes within a 6-month period.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on understanding the sex determination mechanisms in a species with sexual dimorphism and similar chromosome pairs, aiming to clarify its sex chromosome for insights into sex chromosome evolution in Pleuronectiformes.
  • - Whole-genome resequencing revealed Chr23 as the sex chromosome with a significant sex-determining region (SDR) indicating an XX/XY system, and no inversions were found in the SDR but chromosomal rearrangements were noted.
  • - A sex-specific genetic marker was identified, which could enhance breeding programs and practices in aquaculture by allowing for accurate genetic sex identification.

Article Synopsis
  • This meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of bronchial amylase levels in predicting ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in adults on ventilators, after analyzing data from multiple studies.
  • A total of six studies involving 769 patients found that about 36% developed VAP, and the bronchial amylase levels varied widely.
  • The findings suggested that while bronchial amylase has a useful role in VAP prediction (with a sensitivity of 78% and specificity of 75%), it should not be the sole determinant for diagnosis, and should be used alongside other clinical assessments.

Background: Early identification of hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) holds crucial importance in guiding clinical management and reducing mortality. However, existing scoring systems often overlook patient's underlying clinical condition, which significantly impacts prognosis.

Aims: Use the age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (aCCI) to evaluate the patient's complications to develop a more precise model for predicting transplant-free mortality in HBV-ACLF patients.

The granulation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has attracted widespread attention, there is limited research on the high shear wet granulation (HSWG) and wetting mechanisms of sticky TCM powders, which profoundly impact the granule size distribution (GSD). Here we investigate the wetting mechanism of binders and the influence of various parameters on the GSD of HSWG and establish a GSD prediction model. Permeability and contact angle experiments combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to explore the wetting mechanism of hydroalcoholic solutions with TCM powder.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of IL22RA1 in regulating lipid metabolism in the liver, linking it to conditions like NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease).
  • It shows that IL22RA1 is downregulated in unhealthy liver conditions, leading to increased fat accumulation and insulin resistance in liver-specific knockout mice.
  • The research concludes that IL22RA1 helps maintain lipid balance in the liver, and its absence results in harmful lipid accumulation through a specific molecular pathway involving oxysterols.

Early assessment and accurate staging of liver fibrosis may be of great help for clinical diagnosis and treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We aimed to identify serum markers and construct a machine learning (ML) model to reliably predict the stage of fibrosis in CHB patients. The clinical data of 618 CHB patients between February 2017 and September 2021 from Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital were retrospectively analyzed, and these data as a training cohort to build the model.

  • Acyl-CoA-binding proteins (ACBPs) play important roles in lipid metabolism and other biological processes in plants, but their specific functions in the Medicago species are not well understood.
  • Eight ACBP genes were identified in Medicago truncatula and Medicago sativa, categorized into four sub-families, with many showing potential responses to abiotic stressors like salt and drought.
  • The study found that over-expressing certain ACBP genes improved stress tolerance in Arabidopsis seedlings, indicating their potential role in enhancing resistance to environmental challenges.

It is important to determine the relationship between the concentration of chlorophyll a (Chla) and the inherent optical properties (IOPs) of ocean water to develop optical models and algorithms that characterize the biogeochemical properties and estimate biological pumping and carbon flux in this environment. However, previous studies reported relatively large variations in the particulate backscattering coefficient (b(λ)) and Chla from more eutrophic high-latitude waters to clear oligotrophic waters, especially in oligotrophic oceanic areas where these two variables have little covariation. In this study, we examined the variability of b(λ) and Chla in the euphotic layer in oligotrophic areas of the tropical Western Pacific Ocean and determined the sources of these variations by reassessment of in-situ measurements and the biogeochemical-argo (BGC-Argo) database.
