Vertebral augmentation employing polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is a widely used therapeutic technique for treating vertebral compression fractures. In this study, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-enhanced PMMA bone cement (PDMS/PMMA) was developed to address the significant limitations associated with traditional PMMA bone cements in vertebroplasty: excessive exothermicity causing necrosis of normal bone tissues and high stiffness leading to fractures in adjacent vertebrae. The incorporation of PDMS into the PMMA bone cement results in consumption of the heat generated during polymerization, which prevents necrosis of surrounding tissue and speeds up the curing process of PDMS, showcasing the synergistic effects between PMMA and PDMS.

Purpose: Children with precocious puberty undergo rapid physical changes that may lead to behavioral problems. Parenting style, along with parental stress and coping mechanisms, are important parental factors that affect the development of behavioral problems in children. Therefore, we examined the serial mediating effects of parenting style and parent's coping mechanisms on the relationship between parental stress and behavioral problems in girls with precocious puberty.

Despite advances in surgical techniques for tendon injuries and improvements in rehabilitation, the challenge of achieving sufficient tendon regeneration and preventing postoperative tissue adhesions persists for orthopedic surgeons. In this study, we developed a multilayer film with a platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB)-immobilized leaf-stacked structure (LSS) layer (bioactive layer) and an alginate layer (antiadhesive layer) on both sides of a PCL film (). The porous LSS layer on the PCL film was fabricated using a heating-cooling method with tetraglycol, where PDGF-BB was adsorbed onto the LSS layer.

Purpose: The cardiovascular (CV) benefits of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are well established, but their effects on lower limb events (LLEs) remain inconclusive, with conflicting findings from clinical trials and real-world studies. This study aimed to assess the risks of CV and LLEs associated with SGLT2i compared to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Patients And Methods: The study included patients with type 2 diabetes who were newly prescribed SGLT2i or DPP-4i using data from the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea.

Backgrounds: The treatment of complex distal radius fractures, particularly those involving both intra-articular disruption and significant metaphyseal comminution, remains a considerable surgical challenge. While volar locking plates have become a widely accepted standard for stabilizing these fractures, alone they may not address all fracture patterns. This study presents a surgical approach that incorporates the use of a mini-plate to provide targeted support for the metaphyseal region.

Purpose: This study aimed to empirically verify the impact of measurement model selection on research outcomes and their interpretation through an analysis of children's emotional and social problems measured by the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC) using both reflective and formative measurement models. These models were represented by covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) and partial least squares SEM (PLS-SEM), respectively.

Methods: This secondary data analysis evaluated children's emotional and social problems as both reflective and formative constructs.

Background: Organizational well-being is a critical issue that should be addressed within nursing organizations as it boosts the morale and work motivation of its members by enhancing their satisfaction and happiness.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the levels of positive psychological capital, shared leadership, and organizational well-being among nurses, and examine the impact of positive psychological capital and shared leadership on organizational well-being.

Methods: A descriptive survey research design was used, involving 177 nurses with at least one year of work experience at highly specialized hospitals in Korea treating patients with severe conditions.

Metastatic spine cancer can cause pain and neurological issues, making it challenging to distinguish from spinal compression fractures using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To improve diagnostic accuracy, this study developed artificial intelligence (AI) models to differentiate between metastatic spine cancer and spinal compression fractures in MRI images. MRI data from Gyeongsang National University Hospital, collected from January 2019 to April 2022, were processed using Otsu's binarization and Canny edge detection algorithms.

Purpose: Drug use during adolescence can have lasting health consequences, and understanding the factors that contribute to drug use is essential for effective prevention. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing habitual drug use among South Korean adolescents. It employed Bronfenbrenner's ecological model to examine personal, familial, school-related, and social factors.

Background: Integrating family members into the care of hospitalized end-of-life patients enhances patient-family-centered care and significantly influences the experiences of patients and their families. This study used the integrative review methodology to assess the scope and effectiveness of interventions designed to facilitate family involvement in end-of-life care. It identified gaps and consolidated existing knowledge to improve nursing practices.

Eurotiales fungi are thought to be distributed worldwide but there is a paucity of information about their occurrence on diverse substrates or hosts and at specific localities. Some of the Eurotiales, including Aspergillus and Penicillium species, produce an array of secondary metabolites of use for agricultural, medicinal, and pharmaceutical applications. Here, we carried out a survey of the Eurotiales in South Korea, focusing on soil, freshwater, and plants (dried persimmon fruits and seeds of Perilla frutescens, known commonly as shiso).

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries represent a promising solution for achieving high energy densities exceeding 500 Wh kg, leveraging cathode materials with theoretical energy densities up to 2600 Wh kg. These batteries are also cost-effective, abundant, and environment-friendly. In this study, an innovative approach is proposed utilizing highly oxidized single-walled carbon nanotubes (Ox-SWCNTs) as a conductive fibrous scaffold and functional interlayer in sulfur cathodes and separators, respectively, to demonstrate large-area and ultra-flexible Li-S batteries with enhanced energy density.

  • SGLT2 inhibitors, like empagliflozin (EMPA), not only help manage blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes but may also reduce inflammation and protect against atherosclerosis by influencing M2 macrophage activity.
  • EMPA was studied for its effects on hypothalamic inflammation in mice on a high-fat diet, showing regulation of astrocyte markers and inflammatory cytokines linked to the NF-κB pathway.
  • The research suggests that EMPA has potential therapeutic benefits beyond glucose control, offering new strategies for tackling inflammation and neuroprotection in metabolic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed outcomes after systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt placement in 223 patients with biventricular circulation from January 2014 to June 2023.
  • Primary focus was on major adverse shunt-related events, which included issues requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other interventions, with a notably low early death rate (1.8%).
  • Results showed a high probability (94.2%) of successful biventricular repair at 24 months, with specific risk factors like associated genetic anomalies significantly increasing the chances of in-hospital complications.

Background: As the age of initiating sexual intercourse has gradually decreased among South Korean adolescents, earlier vaccination of adolescents for human papillomavirus (HPV) is necessary before their exposure to HPV. Health communication includes "cues to action" that lead to preventive health behaviors, and recently, social networking services, which operate with fewer time and space constraints, have been used in various studies as a form of eHealth communication.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the feasibility and usability of an eHealth communication intervention for HPV vaccination in middle-school girls aimed at the girls and their mothers.

Background: The number of culturally diverse adolescents in South Korea has reached 290,000 and is increasing every year; however, they still represent only 2.5% of the total adolescent population in middle and high schools, making them a minority. Adolescents experiencing cultural diversity are psychologically vulnerable because they grow up in bicultural environments and experience prejudice.
