Left atrial (LA) decompression is often performed in patients on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to help offload the left ventricle. Atrial septal stents may be used to ensure the adequacy of LA decompression; however, if there is cardiopulmonary recovery and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support is no longer needed, the stents require removal. We describe 3 pediatric patients who required venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support and atrial septal stent placement who underwent successful transcatheter removal of the stents after cardiac recovery.

Objective: To describe the clinical and ultrasonographic findings in horses with desmopathy of the abaxial palmar/plantar ligament (APL) of the proximal interphalangeal joint and the prevalence of concurrent musculoskeletal injuries in the pastern and foot.

Animals: Horses presenting to New Bolton Center between March 2017 and November 2022 with an age ranging from 5 to 20 years that underwent lameness evaluation in which lameness was localized to the distal limb and had an ultrasonographic diagnosis of APL desmopathy.

Clinical Presentation: Horses included were those that (1) presented for a lameness examination; (2) had lameness that improved after diagnostic analgesia with a low 4-point nerve block (medial and lateral palmar/plantar nerves and medial and lateral palmar/plantar metacarpal/metatarsal nerves), abaxial sesamoid nerve block (medial and lateral palmar or plantar nerves), or palmar/plantar digital nerve block; and (3) had an ultrasonographic diagnosis of APL desmopathy.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential regulators of gene expression, yet few comprehensive databases exist for miRNA expression in non-model species, limiting our ability to characterize their roles in gene regulation, development, and disease. Similarly, isomiRs - length and sequence isoforms of canonical miRNAs with potentially altered regulatory targets and functions - have received even less attention in non-model species, including the horse, leaving a critical gap in our understanding of their biological significance. To address these challenges, we developed an open-source, containerized pipeline for identifying and quantifying miRNAs and isomiRs (FARmiR: Framework for Analysis and Refinement of miRNAs), and an associated interactive browser (AIMEE: Animal IsomiR and MiRNA Expression Explorer).

The synaptonemal complex (SC) is a meiosis-specific structure that aligns homologous chromosomes and promotes the repair of meiotic DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). To investigate how defects in SC formation affect gametogenesis in zebrafish, we analyzed mutations in two genes encoding core SC components: syce2 and sycp1. In syce2 mutants, chromosomes exhibit partial synapsis, primarily at sub-telomeric regions, whereas sycp1 mutant chromosomes display early prophase co-alignment but fail to synapse.

Reduced mitochondrial quality and quantity in tumors is associated with dedifferentiation and increased malignancy. However, it remains unclear how to restore mitochondrial quantity and quality in tumors and whether mitochondrial restoration can drive tumor differentiation. Our study shows that restoring mitochondrial function using retinoic acid (RA) to boost mitochondrial biogenesis and a mitochondrial uncoupler to enhance respiration synergistically drives neuroblastoma differentiation and inhibits proliferation.

The complex includes high-priority, multidrug-resistant pathogens for which novel antibiotics are urgently needed. Many bacterial strains from this complex harbor a so-called gene cluster that codes for the catabolism of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Here, we demonstrate that possession and expression of genes represent an Achilles' heel for species, which can be exploited to suppress bacterial growth by treatment with IAA and its analog 5-chloro-IAA.

Spinal cord injury-related neuropathic pain is difficult to treat and significantly decreases quality of life. Often functionally limiting and refractory to conventional pharmacologic treatments, treating spinal cord injury-related neuropathic pain necessitates the exploration of novel mechanistic therapeutic strategies. Mounting preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that neurotoxic reactive aldehyde species such as acrolein, produced endogenously in high concentrations following spinal cord injury, are putative therapeutic targets in spinal cord injury-related neuropathic pain.
