Recently, it has been hypothesized that alpha-synuclein protein strain morphology may be associated with clinical subtypes of alpha-synucleinopathies, like Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy. However, direct evidence is lacking due to the caveat of conformation-specific characterization of protein strain morphology. Here we present a new cell model based in vitro method to explore various alpha-synuclein (αsyn) aggregate morphotypes.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), its precursors, and its derivatives (collectively NADome) play a crucial role in cellular processes and maintain redox homeostasis. Understanding the dynamics of these metabolic pools and redox reactions can provide valuable insights into metabolic functions, especially cellular regulation and stress response mechanisms. The accurate quantification of these metabolites is challenging due to the interconversion between the redox forms.

Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is a label-free analytical technique for the determination of the cells' volume and their cytosolic refractive index. Here, we demonstrate the suitability of DHM for the quantification of total lipid accumulation in the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. Presently, microbial lipids are gaining increasing attention due to their nutritional value in feed and food applications.

The crosstalk between the cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) is bidirectional and consists of a pushing/pulling stretch exerted by the cells and a mechanical resistance counteracted by the surrounding microenvironment. It is widely recognized that the stiffness of the ECM, its viscoelasticity, and its overall deformation are the most important traits influencing the response of the cells. Here these three parameters are combined into a concept of elastic energy, which in biological terms represents the mechanical feedback that cells perceive when the ECM is deformed.

Prostate tumor heterogeneity is a major obstacle when studying the biological mechanisms of molecular markers. Increased gene expression levels of secreted frizzled-related protein 4 (SFRP4) is a biomarker in aggressive prostate cancer. To understand how SFRP4 relates to prostate cancer we performed comprehensive spatial and multiomics analysis of the same prostate cancer tissue samples.

The wide array of cognitive functions associated with the hippocampus is supported through interactions with the cerebral cortex. However, most of the direct cortical input to the hippocampus originates in the entorhinal cortex, forming the hippocampal-entorhinal system. In humans, the role of the entorhinal cortex in mediating hippocampal-cortical interactions remains unknown.

Unlabelled: Formaldehyde is a known toxic compound, and functional formaldehyde detoxification is crucial for the survival of all living cells. Such detoxification systems are of particular importance for methylotrophic microorganisms that rely on formaldehyde as a central metabolite in their one-carbon metabolism. Understanding formaldehyde dissimilation pathways in non-methylotrophic industrial microorganisms is necessary for ongoing research aiming at engineering methylotrophy into their metabolism (synthetic methylotrophy).

Appetite loss is prevalent in patients with advanced cancer and negatively affects their quality of life. However, understanding of the factors associated with appetite loss is limited. The current study aims to explore characteristics and therapeutic interventions used for patients with and without appetite loss admitted to an acute palliative care unit.

Unlabelled: We aimed to investigate the risk of hip fracture associated with zoledronic acid treatment compared to alendronate on a population level. The risk of hip fracture was lower in women using zoledronic acid and higher in women who had discontinued treatment. The findings support the effectiveness of intravenous bisphosphonate.

Objective: Fat embolism syndrome and cerebral fat emboli are rare yet serious conditions arising from systemic distribution of bone marrow emboli. Emboli are known to produce high-intensity transient signals (HITS) in a Doppler signal. We hypothesized that both intramedullary nailing in pigs and median sternotomy in human infants cause bone marrow release, that some of these cause cerebral emboli, and that these were detectable by a new cerebral doppler ultrasound monitoring system (NeoDoppler).

Background: The healthcare sector is a complex domain that faces challenges in effectively learning from practices and outcome data. The Learning Health System (LHS) has emerged as a potential framework to improve healthcare by promoting continuous learning. However, its adoption remains limited, often involving only a single clinical department or a part of the LHS cycle.

The nearest taxon index (NTI) and beta nearest taxon index (βNTI) are popular metrics used to infer community assembly in a variety of ecosystems. However, the dependence these metrics have on the underlying phylogenetic tree is often overlooked and can potentially lead to erroneous conclusions. In this paper, we investigated how misclassified sequences in the phylogenetic tree and reduction of the metacommunity richness affect estimates of the assembly processes.

Background: Numerous formal strategies, screening tools, and interventions have been used to prevent malnutrition in long-term care patients. Despite these efforts, the proportion of screened patients is low, and a large proportion are malnourished. Previous research has revealed that healthcare professionals use a broad approach in their nutritional care but has also emphasised the need for further investigation into these approaches.

In recent years, many countries have significantly increased military spending, mainly due to geopolitical instability in several regions and the potential risk of armed conflicts spreading worldwide. In this context, understanding the nutritional needs of soldiers in different climates (warm, cold and high altitude) is important and directly impacts the performance and health of soldiers, especially in extreme environments. The amount of liquids, calories, and macro- and micronutrients contained in military rations must be determined considering the type of exercise, duration and environment.

In the entorhinal cortex (EC), attempts have been made to identify the human homologue regions of the medial (MEC) and lateral (LEC) subregions using either functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). However, there are still discrepancies between entorhinal subdivisions depending on the choice of connectivity seed regions and the imaging modality used. While DTI can be used to follow the white matter tracts of the brain, fMRI can identify functionally connected brain regions.
