With the proliferation of IoT devices, ensuring the security and privacy of these devices and their associated data has become a critical challenge. In this paper, we propose a federated sampling and lightweight intrusion-detection system for IoT networks that use K-meansfor sampling network traffic and identifying anomalies in a semi-supervised way. The system is designed to preserve data privacy by performing local clustering on each device and sharing only summary statistics with a central aggregator.

Bacterial strain-types in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex underlie tuberculosis disease, and have been associated with drug resistance, transmissibility, virulence, and host-pathogen interactions. Spoligotyping was developed as a molecular genotyping technique used to determine strain-types, though recent advances in whole genome sequencing (WGS) technology have led to their characterization using SNP-based sub-lineage nomenclature. Notwithstanding, spoligotyping remains an important tool and there is a need to study the congruence between spoligotyping-based and SNP-based sub-lineage assignation.

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO) is one of the best bismuth-based semiconducting materials because of its narrow band gap energy, good visible light absorption, unique physical and chemical characteristics, and non-toxic nature. In addition, BiVO with different morphologies has been synthesized and exhibited excellent visible light photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of various organic pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Nevertheless, the commercial scale utilization of BiVO is significantly limited because of the poor separation (faster recombination rate) and transport ability of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Article Synopsis
  • People have a natural ability to recognize emotions and individuals better in their own culture, known as the other-race and language-familiarity effect.
  • Researchers used voice transformations to create identical acoustic stimuli in French and Japanese to eliminate cultural expression differences and conducted cross-cultural experiments.
  • The results showed that participants were more accurate in identifying emotional cues and pitch changes in their native language, indicating that difficulties stem more from unfamiliarity with the sounds of another language than from differences in its structure.

Bloch Surface Waves in Open Fabry-Perot Microcavities.

Micromachines (Basel)

February 2023

Dipartimento di Scienza Applicata e Tecnologia, Politecnico di Torino, 10129 Torino, Italy.

Thanks to the increasing availability of technologies for thin film deposition, all-dielectric structures are becoming more and more attractive for integrated photonics. As light-matter interactions are involved, Bloch Surface Waves (BSWs) may represent a viable alternative to plasmonic platforms, allowing easy wavelength and polarization manipulation and reduced absorption losses. However, plasmon-based devices operating at an optical and near-infrared frequency have been demonstrated to reach extraordinary field confinement capabilities, with localized mode volumes of down to a few nanometers.
