Identifying Neoplastic Versus Non-neoplastic Pancreatic Cystic Lesions-What Is the Current Evidence?

Dig Dis Sci

August 2025

Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Digestive Diseases and Surgery Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, 9500 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH, USA.

Background: The widespread use of modern, high-resolution cross-sectional imaging has led to increased detection of pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs), which have varying malignant potential. While most require periodic radiographic surveillance, some warrant biopsy or surgical excision.

Methods: We conducted a narrative review of the literature focusing on the diagnostic accuracy of imaging and the role of endoscopic and molecular tools in PCL evaluation.

Introduction: The concept of "very early" ICC ( ≤ 2 cm, single tumor) has been introduced in the context of LT. Due to the limited number of patients in this subset, the characteristics and long-term outcomes have been ill-defined. We sought to assess long-term outcomes of very early ICC patients undergoing liver resection using a large, multi-institutional database.

Venous thromboembolism is a well-established complication in patients with cancer and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in these subjects. However, the role of radiotherapy in cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (CAT) remains less clearly defined. The incidence of CAT in this population varies widely, with several large-scale studies suggesting an association.

Background: Tissue-based inguinal hernia repairs (IHRs), such as the Shouldice technique, are an acceptable alternative to mesh-based repairs in appropriately selected patients; however, they are often thought to be more painful than tension free repairs in the early postoperative period. We aimed to compare short-term pain and quality of life (QoL) between the Shouldice and Lichtenstein techniques for IHR.

Methods: The Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC) database was queried for patients who underwent open IHR between January 2017 and April 2023.

Cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) femoral components are widely used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) due to their mechanical strength and wear performance. However, concerns regarding corrosion, metal ion release, and hypersensitivity have prompted the development of alternative materials, including nitrided titanium-aluminum-vanadium (nTi-6Al-4V). This study aimed to compare the simulated wear performance of Co-Cr-Mo and nTi-6Al-4V femoral components when articulated against conventional polyethylene articular surface bearings and evaluate the fatigue performance of nTi-6Al-4V components.

As robotic systems become increasingly utilized in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), structured certification programs are necessary to ensure that surgeons are proficiently trained for safe and effective use. This review examines the certification requirements for six major robotic TKA systems: Zimmer Biomet's ROSA, Stryker's Mako, Smith & Nephew's CORI, Depuy Synthes' Velys, Corin's ApolloKnee, and Think Surgical's TSolution One and TMINI. However, variation in certification structures and training requirements between each system is evident.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant global health concern, with >1 million cases annually in the United States, making it a leading cause of preventable hospital-related deaths. Advances in genetic research, particularly genome-wide association studies, have demonstrated the polygenic nature of VTE by identifying numerous single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with susceptibility. The polygenic risk score (PRS), which aggregates the effects of multiple single-nucleotide polymorphisms, has emerged as a valuable tool for improving VTE risk assessment.

BCL-xL dependency in chromophobe renal cell carcinoma.

Cancer Gene Ther

August 2025

Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC) is the third most common subtype of kidney cancer, with limited therapeutic options. Using BH3 profiling to screen ChRCC-derived cell lines, we discovered that BH3 peptides targeting BCL-xL promote apoptosis in ChRCC. Downregulation of BCL2L1 is sufficient to induce apoptosis in ChRCC-derived cells, consistent with our screening results.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) plus endocrine therapy (ET) are the mainstay of treatment for hormone receptor positive, HER2 negative (HR + /HER2-) metastatic breast cancer (MBC). However, disease progression is inevitable and unveiling resistance mechanisms is crucial to guide post-CDK4/6i therapeutic strategies. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed a real-world, multi-institutional cohort of patients with HR + /HER2- MBC characterized by circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) through next-generation sequencing (NGS) before starting second-line treatment.

Peptide vaccines are based on small peptide segments that contain antigenic epitopes recognizable by immune cells. Unlike traditional vaccines, they include only specific antigenic epitopes rather than entire pathogens or proteins. They are recognized, internalized, processed, and presented by antigen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells, and subsequently presented to T cells, triggering an immune response.
