Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is common, and usually clinically inapparent. The prevalence of infection is approximately 1:200 births, but only 10-15% of infants have clinically apparent CMV disease (CACMV) as newborns. The most common long-term disability is sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which occurs in 10-15% of all cases.

BackgroundThe objectives of this study were (1) to describe the symptoms noted by family physicians during help-seeking visits for early psychosis, relative to a validated screening tool for early psychosis in primary care, and (2) to examine the referral disposition of patients meeting the screening tool cut-off.MethodsWe constructed a retrospective cohort of Ontario residents aged 14-35 years with an incident diagnosis of non-affective psychotic disorder between 2005-2015 in health administrative data, and at least one visit in the Electronic Medical Record Primary Care database during the 6 months prior to the date of psychotic disorder diagnosis ( = 572). We abstracted symptoms of psychosis noted by the family physician in the electronic medical records and compared these to the Primary Care Checklist (PCCL) for early psychosis.

Longitudinal changes in brain asymmetry track lifestyle and disease.

Nat Commun

July 2025

The Neuro - Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI), McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, School of Computer Science, McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Human beings may have evolved the largest asymmetries of brain organization in the animal kingdom. Hemispheric left-vs-right specialization is especially pronounced in species-unique capacities, including emotional processing such as facial judgments, language-based feats such as reading books, and creativity such as musical performances. We hence chart the largest longitudinal brain-imaging resource, and provide evidence that brain asymmetry changes continuously in a manner suggestive of neural plasticity throughout adulthood.

Purpose: Spoken discourse is integral to everyday communication; improving discourse outcomes is a primary goal for individuals with aphasia and their families. Consequently, the application of discourse analysis in aphasia assessment and treatment has gained increasing attention in both research and clinical settings. Despite its recognized value among researchers and clinicians, several barriers-such as limited time, inadequate training, and lack of resources-continue to impede the widespread use of discourse analysis into clinical practice.

Biomarker changes associated with fornix deep brain stimulation in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimers Dement

June 2025

Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, University Health Network, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Introduction: Deep brain stimulation of the fornix (fx-DBS) is being investigated for treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The therapy aims at alleviating memory and cognitive circuit dysfunction. In preclinical models of AD, electrical stimulation of the memory circuit has demonstrated a possible disease-modifying potential.

Objective: An estimated 15-22% of Canadian kindergarten-age children have a special health need (SHN), defined as a clinical diagnosis, a functional need requiring special accommodation at school, or a health condition leading to increased needs. Children with SHN may be more likely to experience mental health disorders than their peers without SHN, placing them at risk for further health and academic challenges. Our objective was to determine the odds of children with SHN identified in kindergarten being diagnosed with a mental health disorder by age 16.

Pain chronobiology in clinical trial participants with fibromyalgia: a comparison with neuropathic pain.

Pain Rep

August 2025

Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine, Kingston Health Sciences Centre, Queen's University, Kingston, ON, Canada.

Introduction: Diurnal pain rhythmicity is well recognized for neuropathic pain (NP) and osteoarthritis, however, less is known for fibromyalgia.

Objective: We conducted secondary analyses of clinical trial data to describe pain rhythmicity in fibromyalgia compared to NP.

Methods: We have compared morning-evening pain differences in fibromyalgia with that of NP by conducting exploratory analyses of data from 2 fibromyalgia trials (68 pooled participants) and 1 NP trial (55 participants).

Advances in biomarkers and pathophysiology of vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) are expected to bring greater mechanistic insights, more targeted treatments, and potentially disease-modifying therapies. The 2025 Annual Workshop of the Albert Research Institute for White Matter and Cognition, sponsored by the Leo and Anne Albert Charitable Trust since 2015, focused on novel biomarkers for VCID. The meeting highlighted the complexity of dementia, emphasizing that the majority of cases involve multiple brain pathologies, with vascular pathology typically present.

BackgroundNeuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) progress differently among individuals with autosomal dominant familial frontotemporal dementia (FTD) caused by genetic mutations in granulin (+) or chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (+).ObjectiveTo determine whether these differences begin prior to the onset of dementia, we compared the longitudinal rates of change of NPS among +, +, and noncarrier controls in the predementia phase. Additionally, we assessed whether the NPS changes were correlated with gray matter (GM) volume loss or white matter signal abnormalities (WMSAs) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Introduction: The availability of sociocultural and language-appropriate study materials and instruments is critical for the assessment of cognitive function in people from diverse backgrounds. This report describes the translations and cultural adaptations of study materials for the Asian Cohort for Alzheimer's Disease (ACAD) study.

Methods: We performed translations and cultural adaptations in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) translation guidelines to ensure reliable, complete, and culturally appropriate translations from English to the specified Asian languages.

The association between positive parent-child interaction and mental health outcomes in children aged 1-11 years in Canada.

Can J Public Health

June 2025

Department of Health Promotion, Chronic Disease, and Injury Prevention, Public Health Ontario, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Objectives: The prevalence of mental health disorders in Canada has increased over the past 10 years. Positive parent-child interaction (PCI) is a potential protective factor for child mental health, but has not been explored in a Canadian context. This study aimed to determine the association between positive PCI and mental health outcomes in children ages 1-11 years in Canada.

Computed Tomography Perfusion and Angiography for Death by Neurologic Criteria.

JAMA Neurol

September 2025

Division of Critical Care Medicine, Montreal Children's Hospital, McGill University, Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Importance: Accurate and timely confirmation of death by neurologic criteria (DNC) is essential for clinical decision-making and organ-donation processes, yet currently available ancillary tests have suboptimal diagnostic performance or limited validation.

Objectives: To determine the diagnostic accuracy, interrater reliability, and safety of brain computed tomography (CT) perfusion and CT angiography as ancillary investigations for DNC.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Between April 25, 2017, and March 10, 2021, a prospective, multicenter, blinded diagnostic accuracy cohort study was conducted in 15 adult intensive care units across Canada.

Introduction: Mental health problems are important causes of disability and economic costs worldwide. Randomised clinical trials examining the treatment of mental health disorders measure heterogeneous outcomes, causing difficulties in data synthesis, interpretation and translation into clinical practice. The aim of the Patient Important Outcomes in Psychiatry (PIO-Psych) Initiative is to develop an overarching, transdiagnostic research-based and consensus-based core outcome set for adult mental health disorders.
