Article Abstract

Background: Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Heart Failure (HF) are the leading global causes of death from Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD). This study aimed to investigate the association of serum Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), and thiol levels with CVD and new potential biomarkers.

Methods: The study included serum samples from 150 participants, including 50 AMI patients, 50 HF patients, and 50 healthy individuals. Oxidative stress, trace elements (Cu and Zn), and thiol levels were investigated by automated kits in AMI and HF patients compared to the control group.

Results: T-thiol, N-thiol and Cu levels were higher in the AMI group than in the control group (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively). Cu and Zn levels were higher in the HF group compared to the control group (p < 0.001, p < 0.01, respectively). Compared to the HF group, T-thiol (p < 0.05), N-thiol (p < 0.05), and Zn (p < 0.001) levels were higher in the AMI group. By ROC analysis, Zn, Cu and thiol levels showed moderate discriminative power, emphasizing their candidacy as biomarkers.

Conclusions: Despite the limitations of age-related variations and sample size, this study pioneers the comparative analysis of AMI and HF, contributing to the elucidation of the complex connections between Zn, Cu and thiol levels in cardiovascular pathologies. It increases the importance of Zn, Cu and thiol levels in CVD's status, necessitating further research on this topic with refined methodologies.

Background: During intense exercise, anaerobic metabolism predominantly produces energy in the body, resulting in lactic acid (LA) accumulation, which contributes to muscle fatigue and soreness and may also impair neurological and cardiovascular functions. In endurance sports, the lactate threshold (LT) is a key indicator of an athlete's capacity to clear and utilize LA, directly influencing athletic performance and endurance. Therefore, LA detection is crucial for assessing the physical condition of both athletes and the general population, as well as for optimizing training programs.

Background: To review the biological functions of ergothioneine (ERGO), its correlation with plasma levels in cognitive frailty, and research progress in treating frailty and cognitive impairment, with the aim of providing a reference for ERGO application in cognitive frailty treatment.

Methods: A comprehensive review of existing literature on ERGO's chemical structure, sources, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and its role in cognitive frailty was conducted. Clinical trial data and metabolomic studies were also analyzed to understand ERGO's therapeutic potential.

Understanding and controlling the nucleation and growth processes of gold clusters are crucial for advancing the nucleation theory and targeted cluster synthesis. While mass spectrometry has revealed the intermediate species formed during the growth process, the overall structural evolution remains unclear due to a lack of crystallographic information. In this study, we examined a new synthetic method for thiolate-protected gold clusters in their embryonic stage.

Plant hormones are known to regulate the uptake and distribution of mineral elements, including heavy metals, in crops. This study evaluated the effects of exogenous jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA), applied individually or in combination, on selenium (Se) enrichment and cadmium (Cd) mitigation in pak choi ( L.) cultivated in Se-rich and high-Cd soils.

Cysteine (Cys) is a core biological thiol that regulates cellular redox homeostasis. Abnormal concentrations of Cys are closely related to tumorigenesis, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders, and are often used as biomarkers for cancer cells. Therefore, detecting and analyzing its levels in the microenvironment of cancer cells is important.
