Article Abstract

State transition is a dynamic process to balance the amount of light energy received by photosystem I (PSI) and photosystem II (PSII) so as to maintain an optimal photosynthetic yield and to minimize photo-damage in a fluctuating light environment. Recent studies show that chloroplast acetyltransferase participates in the acetylation of photosynthetic proteins and state transitions. However, the exact molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we characterized a chloroplast acetyltransferase in Solanum lycopersicum, SlGNAT2, and found that mutants lacking this enzyme are deficient in state transitions and retarded in growth under fluctuating light. Acetyltransferase activity assays and fluorescence measurements suggest that Lys of mature SlLhcb2 protein is a target of SlGNAT2 and might be involved in state transitions. In addition, Cys-related redox changes of SlGNAT2 affect its acetylation activity on SlLhcb2 and influence the assembly of the PSI-LHCI-LHCII supercomplex. Therefore, we propose that the chloroplast redox state may regulate the activity of SlGNAT2 which in turn acetylates SlLhcb2 and mediates state transitions in higher plants.

A novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) system with superior performance was successfully developed through local chemical modification from thiophene to thiophene sulfone. This approach, leveraging easily accessible tetraphenylthiophene precursors, dramatically enhances the photophysical properties in a simple oxidation step. Notably, the representative 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylthiophene sulfone (3c) demonstrates remarkable solid-state emission characteristics with a fluorescence quantum yield of 72% and an AIE factor of 240, substantially outperforming its thiophene analog.

Electric gating in atomically thin field-effect devices based on transition-metal dichalcogenides has recently been employed to manipulate their excitonic states, even producing exotic phases of matter, such as an excitonic insulator or Bose-Einstein condensate. Here, we mimic the electric gating effect of a bilayer-MoS on graphite by charge transfer induced by the adsorption of molecular p- and n-type dopants. The electric fields produced are evaluated from the electronic energy-level realignment and Stark splitting determined by X-ray and UV photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and compare very well with literature values obtained by optical spectroscopy for similar systems.

Transition metal (TM)-doped silicon clusters represent critical model systems for understanding nanoscale hybridization and stability mechanisms. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of structural evolution, electronic properties, and thermodynamic stability in ruthenium-doped silicon clusters (RuSi̅, = 7-11) through integrated experimental and computational approaches. Anion photoelectron spectroscopy combined with density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP), coupled-cluster theory [CCSD(T)], and bonding analyses (AdNDP, NICS, ACID) reveals charge-state-dependent structural transitions, with full Ru encapsulation emerging at = 10 for anions and = 11 for neutrals.

Photosynthetic organisms have evolved diverse strategies to adapt to fluctuating light conditions, balancing efficient light capture with photoprotection. In green algae and land plants, this involves specialized light-harvesting complexes (LHCs), non-photochemical quenching, and state transitions driven by dynamic remodeling of antenna proteins associated with Photosystems (PS) I and II. Euglena gracilis, a flagellate with a secondary green plastid, represents a distantly related lineage whose light-harvesting regulation remains poorly understood.

The ectoparasitic honeybee (Apis mellifera) mite Tropilaelaps mercedesae represents a serious threat to Asian apiculture and a growing concern for global beekeeping due to its high reproductive capacity and host adaptability. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying its host adaptation across life stages remain poorly characterized. Here, we performed integrated transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses of female mites at 4 key postembryonic developmental stages: protonymphs, deutonymphs, mature adults, and reproductive adults.
