Article Abstract

Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) using yttrium-90 (Y)-labeled glass and resin microspheres is an emerging therapeutic technique for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the non-biodegradability and rapid settlement of current commercial microspheres might hinder their even distribution and repetitive administration thus causing unsatisfactory therapeutic effects. In this context, novel functional chitosan-based microspheres (CPIs) that can efficiently label Y as a favorable TARE material were developed for the first time by successive grafting poly (glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and iminodiacetic acid (IDA) onto chitosan microspheres (CMs). The results confirmed that the CPIs had desirable spherical shapes with average diameters of around 20.9 μm, an ideal settlement rate within 5 min, and considerable biodegradability at 10th weeks. It reached Y adsorption equilibrium within 30 min and maintained the maximum adsorption capacity up to 14.95 mg g at pH 6.0 following pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. Additionally, Y-labeled CPIs were rather stable in vitro, for which Y would firmly interact with the sodium carboxylate group and tertiary amine nitrogen atoms on IDA, and its leakage when shaken in phosphate-buffered saline for 24 h was barely detected. Altogether, these properties of the as-developed CPIs hold great potential as promising radioembolization microspheres for TARE therapy against liver cancer.

RNA interference (RNAi) is an endogenous eukaryote viral defence mechanism representing a unique form of post-transcriptional gene silencing that can be induced via the exongenous application of dsRNA. Due to its high specificity, dsRNA-based biopesticides are being developed to control pest insects. Whilst many lepidopteran species are recalcitrant to RNAi, Tuta absoluta, a polyphagous insect responsible for extensive crop damage, is sensitive.

The increasing prevalence of respiratory disorders highlights the urgent need for effective mucosal vaccines that elicit targeted immune responses at pathogen entry sites. However, the advancement of mucosal vaccines is limited by challenges in antigen delivery and overcoming mucosal immune tolerance. In this study, we developed a gene delivery platform using chitosan functionalized with lactobionic acid (LA) to enhance targeting of antigen-presenting cells and to form stable DNA polyplexes with high transfection efficiency.

In this work, cerium oxide nanoparticles prepared through the solvothermal route (sCeO NPs) are integrated into chitosan (CH) matrices to serve as an efficient coating for banana preservation. The morphological, structural, mechanical, and water-barrier properties of nanocomposite films integrated with various sCeO concentrations were investigated to determine the optimal sCeO NPs concentration within the film matrix. Furthermore, the sensory evaluation and physicochemical properties of the coated and uncoated bananas, including visual attributes, peel browning, CO production, firmness, weight loss, ripening rate (based on total soluble solids and titratable acidity), and pH, are considered during storage.

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as widespread environmental pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, primarily due to the extensive use of plastic products, their persistent nature, and improper disposal methods. It is essential to develop effective purification methods to treat the hazardous MPs in water. Chitin and chitosan (CS) have gained attention as promising adsorbents for MPs because of their low cost, abundance, biodegradability, and the presence of functional groups such as amino and hydroxyl groups, which facilitate the removal of various toxins from wastewater.

This work aims to construct a nanocomposite coating made from chitosan (CS) and hydrothermally prepared ceria nanoparticles (hCeO NPs), and thoroughly evaluate its influence on extending the lifespan of post-harvest bananas over a 12-day period. The hCeO NPs were characterized to confirm their synthesis before being integrated within the CS matrix. The morphological, structural, mechanical, water-, and UV-barrier properties of nanocomposite coating films were determined.
