Article Abstract

A novel hydrogen-bonded supramolecular crown-ether-based inclusion compound, [(DL-α-Phenylglycine)(18-crown-6)][(CoCl)](), was obtained via evaporation in a methanolic solution at room temperature using DL-α-phenylglycine, 18-crown-6, cobalt chloride (CoCl), and hydrochloric acid. Its structure, thermal properties, and electrical properties were characterized via elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, variable-temperature infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and variable temperature-variable frequency dielectric constant testing. The compound was a monoclinic crystal system in the space group at low temperature (100 K) and room temperature (293 K). Analysis of the single crystal structure showed that [(CoCl)] presented an edge-sharing ditetrahedral structure in the disordered state, while the protonated DL-α-phenylglycine molecule in the disordered state and intramolecular hydroxyl group (-OH) underwent dynamic rocking, causing a significant stretching motion of the O-H···Cl-type one-dimensional hydrogen bond chain. This resulted in dielectric anomalies in the three axes of the crystal, thus showing significant dielectric anisotropy.

Crown ether-based hamburger POMOF combined with polypyrrole as a highly reversible lithium-ion battery anode material.

The incorporation of polyoxometalates (POMs) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to construct POMOFs can improve the stability of POM-based materials, making POMOFs suitable as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In this study, a novel hybrid hamburger crystalline sample, namely, CuI4(L1)(MoO) (NAU6), was successfully synthesized by stabilizing POM clusters through the introduction of [aza-crown ether-Cu] units (L1 = 12,25-dimethyl-3,8,16,21-tetraaza-tricyclo[21,3,11,14]octacosa-1(27),10,12,14(28),23,25-hexaene-27,28-diol). NAU6 was characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing that each [β-MoO] anion was sandwiched between two [aza-crown ether-Cu] units to form two discrete hamburgers, which were further extended to a 3D supramolecular framework.

Due to the analogous physicochemical properties and weak coordination ability of alkali and alkaline earth metals, accurate separation of radioactive Sr from groundwater or seawater still presents a big challenge in environmental radioactivity remediation. Here we mimic the complexation behavior of molecular crown-ether carboxylic acids to construct an elegant negatively charged supramolecular trap in an anionic crown ether-based metal-organic framework (ZJU-X99) for precisely catching Sr. Owing to the synergistic effects of electrostatic interactions arising from the In(COO) nodes and supramolecular host-guest recognition from the 18-crown-6 rings, ZJU-X99 exhibits rapid adsorption kinetics (1 min), high adsorption capacity (263 mg/g), and exceptional selectivity for Sr even when 1000-fold of Na⁺, K⁺ and Cs⁺ coexist.

Noncovalent interactions have received much attention in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. Hydrogen bonding and weak interaction forces affect crystal stacking. Crown-ether-based host-guest inclusion compounds with hydrogen bonding and weak intermolecular interaction forces deserve our attention.

Organic amine crown ether supramolecular compounds, based on crystal engineering design, have already made significant research progress in functional devices such as ferroelectrics, ferroelastics and nonlinear optical materials, especially those involving anilinium cations, which have attracted widespread attention. In comparison, benzylammonium cations have been less studied and most counter-ions are inorganic metal salt anions, crystallizing in centrosymmetric space groups without nonlinear optical (NLO) response. By changing the anion, we have obtained two types of crown ether inclusion compounds, namely, benzylammonium bis(methanesulfonyl)azanide-1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane (1/1), CHN·CHNOS·CHO or [(BA)(18-crown-6)][DMSA] [BA = benzylammonium and DMSA = bis(methanesulfonyl)azanide] and benzylammonium (methanesulfonyl)(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)azanide-1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane (1/1), CHN·CHFNOS·CHO or [(BA)(18-crown-6)][TfNMs] [TfNMs = (methylsulfonyl)(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)azanide].

Ferroelectric (FE)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) multiferroic materials have sparked growing interest due to their huge possibilities in energy-saving, photoelectric devices, nonvolatile storage, and switches. However, realizing FE-AFM properties in a hybrid molecular material is difficult because ferroelectric and magnetic orders are commonly mutually exclusive. Here, we report an FE-AFM multiferroic semiconductor [NH(18-crown-6)][Mn(SCN)] (NCMS) by supramolecular assembly approach via molecular rotor synthon [NH(18-crown-6)] and inorganic magnetic module [Mn(SCN)].
