People generally take the subway and inevitably inhale the fine particles (PM) on subway platforms. This study revealed whether and how subway PM causes lung inflammation. Herein, the pulmonary inflammatory response to subway PM was observed in mice, manifesting as the inflammatory cells infiltration and collagen deposition in tissue, inflammatory cytokine enhancement in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and Toll-like receptors signal pathway activation in the lungs. Furthermore, single-cell RNA sequencing unearthed subway PM-induced cell-specific responses in the lungs. Twenty immune subsets were identified by the molecular and functional properties. Specific cell populations of CD4 T and γδ T cells were regarded as the predominant sources of pneumonitis induced by subway PM. Moreover, we demonstrated that the lung inflammatory injury was significantly more attenuated in Rag1 mice lacking functional T cells and B cells than that in wild type mice. We proved the slight inflammation of lung tissue in Rag1 mice may be dependent on monocytes and neutrophils by activation of the intracellular molecular network. This is the first experimental study on subway PM causing pulmonary inflammatory damage. It will set an alarm for people who usually travel by subway and efficient measures to reduce PM should be developed in subway stations.

Study Objective: This study assessed triage efficacy and hemorrhage control of emergency responders from different professions who used the Sort, Assess, Life-Saving Treatment (SALT) triage algorithm in a virtual reality (VR) simulation of a terrorist subway bombing.

With the rapid expansion of underground rail transit construction in China, the high carbon emissions associated with subway tunnels and stations have become an increasing concern. This study systematically examines the carbon emissions of prefabricated concrete-filled steel pipe columns (PCSPCs) during the construction phase of a Beijing subway station built via the pile beam arch (PBA) method, applying the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology as a case study. An analytical framework for the synergistic optimization of carbon emissions and costs was developed.

The authors accumulated 22 datasets, which were provided by the Socio-Acoustic Survey Data Archive and derived from the other surveys conducted in Japan. Peatland conservation and restoration are globally important goals because of peatlands' potential to sequester and store carbon for millennia, regulate hydrology, and emit greenhouse gases (GHGs) when degraded. To provide information that can be used to identify possible targets for restoration, we have developed a peatland condition map for the conterminous US and Hawaii using existing GIS-based information. We intersected gSSURGO histosols and histic epipedons (HE) with layers for land use, crops, ditches, roads, and railroads (within 150 m buffers for the last three), land protection classes, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) wetland easements.
