Economically sustainable development requires more viable waste recycling solutions. In this context, we address the problem of utilizing chromium-containing sludge, a prevalent and environmentally hazardous waste. Meanwhile, sustainable energy development must develop ecology-friendly and low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Herein, we report an ultra-low-cost electrocatalyst from chromium-containing sludge. The optimum preparation conditions are determined by optimizing the calcination temperature and the loading of nickel acetylacetonate. The optimized catalyst delivers excellent stability and outstanding OER activity with overpotentials of 320 mV at 10 mA cm in alkaline media. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the energy barrier of OER is decreased because of the catalyst's heterogeneous structure arrangement and confirm the influence of chromium on performance improvement. The concept of "turning waste into treasure" stimulates the search for methods to process Cr-containing waste and produce low-cost, high-performance electrocatalysts.

Reaction intermediates (RI) are key factors that directly determine the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, a local electric field microenvironment was built in a FeNi and MoNi heterostructure (H-FeNiMo/NMF) to induce the redistribution of hydroxyls and protons on the metal sites during the OER and HER. H-FeNiMo/NMF requires only 270 and 155 mV to reach 100 mA cm in alkaline media for OER and HER, respectively.

Ni-Fe (oxy)hydroxides are among the most active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline media. However, achieving precise control over local asymmetric Fe-O-Ni active sites in Ni-Fe oxyhydroxides for key oxygenated intermediates' adsorption steric configuration regulation of the OER is still challenging. Herein, we report a two-step dealloying strategy to fabricate asymmetric Fe-O-Ni pair sites in the shell of NiOOH@FeOOH/NiOOH heterostructures from NiFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocubes, involving anion exchange and structure reconstruction.

Freezing point depression due to high salt concentration is crucial for liquid water to exist on cold worlds, expanding special regions where habitats are plausible. Determination of the growth tolerances of terrestrial microbes in analog systems impacts planetary protection protocols aimed at preventing interference with life detection missions or potential native ecosystems on celestial bodies. We measured the salinity tolerances of 18 salinotolerant bacteria (Bacillus, Halomonas, Marinococcus, Nesterenkonia, Planococcus, Salibacillus, and Terribacillus).

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical to energy conversion technologies and requires efficient catalysts for superior performance. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbide-derived carbon (N-CDC) catalysts are prepared using novel engineered molecular architectures based on polymer-derived ceramic technology. The obtained catalyst materials show a surface N concentration of >5 wt % and a hierarchically porous structure, resulting in a specific surface area of over 2000 m g.

The rational design of electrode materials with outstanding energy and power density for supercapacitors (SCc) and high-performance electrocatalysts in alkaline media plays an indispensable role in the application of energy storage and overall water splitting. In this paper, we prepared NiCoFe layered ternary hydroxides (LTH) using a hydrothermal synthesis method. The sample with a Ni/Co/Fe ratio of 1:2:0.
