Article Abstract

Vapor-phase Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime (CHO) to ε-caprolactam (CPL) is still difficult to commercialize at the industrial scale due to its relatively low catalytic activity and poor lifetime. Herein, we synthesized a series of pure-silicon zeolites (including MFI, MEL, and -SVR) with three-dimensional 10-member-ring topolgies, diverse silanol status, and hierarchical porosity to investigate the synergistic effects of inner diffusivity and reactivity. S-1 zeolite of MFI-type topology with plentiful silanol nests exhibits a more preferable catalytic performance in terms of CHO conversion (99.7%) and CPL selectivity (89.7%), much higher than those of MEL- and -SVR-type zeolites mainly due to their diverse silanol distribution. With the construction of hierarchical porosity, S-1-P shows improved CPL selectivity of 94.1% owing to the enhanced diffusivity to shorten the retention time of the reactant and product molecules. The reaction mechanism and network have been further revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental designs, which indicate that silanol nests are major active sites due to their suitable interaction with CHO rather than terminal silanols. Particularly, the microenvironments of silanols can be modulated by alcohol solvents, ascribed to their different charge transfer and steric hindrance. Consequently, S-1-P shows superior CPL selectivity of 97.3% in ethonal solvents, which have higher adsorb energy of -0.627 eV with silanol nests than other alcohols. The present study not only provides a fundamental guide for the design of zeolite catalysts but also provides a reference for modulating the microenvironment of active sites according to the catalytic mechanism.

Tungsten Species on Beta Zeolite with Abundant Silanol Nests for Efficient Olefin Metathesis.

Tungstate-based catalysts for olefin metathesis generally suffer from insufficient reaction rates, which require relatively high temperatures for the satisfied activities. This issue is mainly due to the shortage of active WO species related to intrinsic low adsorption and poor activation of olefin molecules. Herein, we found that the silanol nests in dealuminated Beta zeolite (DeAl-Beta) were favorable for high dispersion of tungsten species, forming active WO species on the zeolite, which was helpful for the adsorption and activation of olefin molecules, thus facilitating the generation of metallocycle intermediates.

Self-pillared pentasil (SPP) zeolites show great promise for sustainable catalysis but face challenges in stabilizing strong Lewis acid (L-acid) sites due to weak metal-surface interactions. This study develops an "energy-driven migration" strategy to construct confined Zr-Lewis acid sites through defect engineering of boron-containing SPP precursors. By combining controlled Zr grafting with subsequent nitric acid treatment, we achieved selective deboronation to generate tailored silanol nests, directing the migration of surface Zr species into framework-confined sites.

Characterising hydroxyl groups in zeolites and other amorphous solids often relies on methods such as IR and NMR spectroscopy. Their power to distinguish different types of hydroxyl groups diminishes when band broadening from hydrogen bonding and structural heterogeneity occurs. In support of this problem, we report femtosecond 2D-IR spectroscopy of some of the different types of hydroxyl groups present in zeolites.

Cobalt-based catalysts have emerged as promising substitutes for Pt- and Cr-based propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalysts. However, controlling the distribution of Co species and achieving stable active centers remains challenging. Here, we report that reaction-driven reconstruction of metallic cobalt (Co) species within pure silica MFI zeolite (S-1) into CoO clusters within silanol nests during PDH yields efficient and durable performance.

ConspectusFor chemical reactions with complex pathways, it is extremely difficult to adjust the catalytic performance. The previous strategies on this issue mainly focused on modifying the fine structures of the catalysts, including optimization of the geometric/electronic structure of the metal nanoparticles (NPs), regulation of the chemical composition/morphology of the supports, and/or adjustment of the metal-support interactions to modulate the reaction kinetics on the catalyst surface. Although significant advances have been achieved, the catalytic performance is still unsatisfactory.
