Article Abstract

Background: Higher concentrations of particulate matter (PM) have been shown to cause deterioration of the symptoms of respiratory and cardiovascular disease in several regional studies. Here, we aimed to investigate the healthcare utilization of lung cancer patients associated with short-term exposure to PM at the national level in Korea.

Methods: We extracted the data of 210 558 subjects over a period of 3 years (2015-2017), who were diagnosed with lung cancer before 2015 and benefited from the National Health Insurance Sharing Service. We performed the interpolation method using the geographic information system to calculate the estimated mean PM and PM concentrations by regions and classified three groups as high (upper 10%), intermediate (10%-90%), and low (bottom 10%) based on the mean PM mass concentrations of the month.

Results: The monthly average number of outpatient visits was significantly increased in high PM urban areas (46.296 vs. 50.646, p = 0.015). In high PM nationwide regions, the monthly average number of emergency admission was significantly increased (0.528 vs. 0.785, p = 0.001). The outpatient visits tended to change with PM concentration and correlated with PM /PM concentrations in urban and nationwide areas. In high PM urban regions, there was a significant increase in bronchodilator prescriptions (3.102 vs. 3.758, p = 0.008). Concerning high PM nationwide regions, there were significantly increased prescriptions of antibiotics, steroids, bronchodilators, antihistamines, and mucolytics.

Conclusions: This study suggests that exposure to PM is significantly associated with hospital utilization and drug prescription in lung cancer patients.

Lung cancer, as one of the cancers with the highest morbidity and mortality rates in the world, requires accurate detection of its vital serum marker, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), which is a key challenge for early detection of lung cancer. However, traditional chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) methods rely on labeled antibodies (Abs) and suffer from complex operations and high costs. In this work, a label-free CLIA based on CL-functionalized mesoporous magnetic nanoparticles (CuFeO@mSiO-Cys-Luminol-Au NPs) is developed for the rapid and sensitive detection of NSE.

There are no proven therapies for metastatic or unresectable Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma (ChRCC). ChRCC is characterized by high glutathione levels and hypersensitivity to ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death characterized by peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The underlying mechanisms leading to ferroptosis hypersensitivity are unknown.

Background: Studies examining the association of chronic kidney disease (CKD) with cancer risk have demonstrated conflicting results.

Methods: This was an individual participant data meta-analysis including 54 international cohorts contributing to the CKD Prognosis Consortium. Included cohorts had data on albuminuria [urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR)], estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), overall and site-specific cancer incidence, and established risk factors for cancer.

Glucose restriction generally limits tumor growth. Recently, Wu et al. reported that glucose restriction inhibits primary tumors but promotes lung metastasis by forming a macrophage-dominated, natural killer (NK) cell-deficient pre-metastatic niche (PMN).
