Article Abstract

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with both high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) are strongly desired to realize efficient and stable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Control of excited-state dynamics via molecular design plays a central role in optimizing the PLQY and RISC rate of TADF materials but remains challenging. Here, 3 TADF emitters possessing similar molecular structures, similar high PLQYs (89.5% to 96.3%), and approximate energy levels of the lowest excited singlet states (S), but significantly different spin-flipping RISC rates (0.03 × 10 s vs. 2.26 × 10 s) and exciton lifetime (297.1 to 332.8 μs vs. 6.0 μs) were systematically synthesized to deeply investigate the feasibility of spin-flip between charge-transfer excited states (CT-CT) transition. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the small singlet-triplet energy gap together with low RISC reorganization energy between the CT and CT states could provide an efficient RISC through fast spin-flip CT-CT transition, without the participation of an intermediate locally excited state, which has previously been recognized as being necessary for realizing fast RISC. Finally, the OLED based on the champion TADF emitter achieves a maximum external quantum efficiency of 27.1%, a tiny efficiency roll-off of 4.1% at 1,000 cd/m, and a high luminance of 28,150 cd/m, which are markedly superior to those of the OLEDs employing the other 2 TADF emitters.

First-principles insights into structure and magnetism in ultra-small tetrahedral iron oxide nanoparticles.

Structural and magnetic properties of ultra-small tetrahedron-shaped iron oxide nanoparticles were investigated using density functional theory. Tetrahedral and truncated tetrahedral models were considered in both non-functionalized form and with surfaces passivated by pseudo-hydrogen atoms. The focus on these two morphologies reflects their experimental relevance at this size scale and the feasibility of performing fully relaxed, atomistically resolved first-principles simulations.

The development of high-efficiency and low-cost multi resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters especially in the deep-blue region is critically limited due to intrinsic excimer quenching of planar π-extended frameworks. Herein, a novel design strategy is reported for realizing high-efficiency oxygen-bridged cyclized boron-based MR-TADF emitters via engineering intermolecular packing mode. Three organic donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules with different molecular configurations are designed and synthesized, which can readily form modulated packing patterns with fastidiously regulating intermolecular charge transfer (CT) in crystalline states.

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) mechanism of the fluorescent styrene derivative 4-dimethylamino-2-benzylidene malonic acid dimethyl ester (BIM) in methanol solution is theoretically investigated using spin-flip long-range corrected time-dependent density functional theory (SF-LC-TDDFT). The potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the ground (S) and first singlet excited (S) states of BIM were calculated along the rotation of the aryl main axis ( angle rotation), consistent with experimental observations. For the monomer, our findings reveal a significant reduction in oscillator strength, approaching zero at the optimized geometry in the S state.

The development of multiple resonances thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters exhibiting high efficiency, narrowband emission, rapid reverse intersystem crossing rate (k), and suppressed concentration quenching simultaneously is of great significance yet a formidable challenge. Herein, an effective strategy is presented to realize the above target by synergizing multiple charge-transfer excited states, including short-range charge transfer (SRCT), through-bond charge transfer (TBCT), and through-space charge transfer (TSCT). The proof-of-concept emitter 4tCz2B exhibits a bright green emission with a narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 21 nm (0.

Multiple resonance (MR) thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials hold significant potential for applications in high color purity and highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, their inherently large planar structures often result in severe aggregation-induced quenching and slow spin-flip processes, presenting significant challenges that limit their practical applications. In this study, we designed and synthesized two MR-TADF molecules, tCON-Cz and tCON-2tBuCz, by incorporating a tCON backbone with carbazole or 3,6-di--butylcarbazole at the ortho position of the phenyl ring.
