1,4-Dioxane is a contaminant of emerging concern that has been commonly detected in groundwater. In this study, a stable and robust 1,4-dioxane degrading enrichment culture was obtained from uncontaminated soil. The enrichment was capable to metabolically degrade 1,4-dioxane at both high (100 mg L) and environmentally relevant concentrations (300 μg L), with a maximum specific 1,4-dioxane degradation rate (q) of 0.044 ± 0.001 mg dioxane h mg protein, and 1,4-dioxane half-velocity constant (K) of 25 ± 1.6 mg L. The microbial community structure analysis suggested Pseudonocardia species, which utilize the dioxane monooxygenase for metabolic 1,4-dioxane biodegradation, were the main functional species for 1,4-dioxane degradation. The enrichment culture can adapt to both acidic (pH 5.5) and alkaline (pH 8) conditions and can recover degradation from low temperature (10°C) and anoxic (DO < 0.5 mg L) conditions. 1,4-Dioxane degradation of the enrichment culture was reversibly inhibited by TCE with concentrations higher than 5 mg L and was completely inhibited by the presence of 1,1-DCE as low as 1 mg L. Collectively, these results demonstrated indigenous stable and robust 1,4-dioxane degrading enrichment culture can be obtained from uncontaminated sources and can be a potential candidate for 1,4-dioxane bioaugmentation at environmentally relevant conditions. KEY POINTS: •1,4-Dioxane degrading enrichment was obtained from uncontaminated soil. • The enrichment culture could degrade 1,4-dioxane to below 10 μg L. •Low K and low cell yield of the enrichment benefit its application in bioremediation.

Objectives: To study the impact of SURF4 expression level on long-term prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) and biological behaviors of GC cells.
Methods: SURF4 expression level in GC and its association with long-term patient prognosis were analyzed using publicly available databases and in 155 GC patients with low and high SURF4 expressions detected immunohistochemically. The Cox proportional hazard model and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to analyze independent prognostic predictors of GC and the 5-year survival rate of the patients with different SURF4 expression levels.

Sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter (SMVT) is a biotin transporter over-expressed in various types of cancer cells and is commonly studied for targeted drug delivery using biotin conjugates. However, such conjugates lack the carboxyl group needed for recognition by SMVT. Previously, we proposed that SMVT is unlikely the transporter of biotin conjugates.

Issue Addressed: Citizen science, an approach to health promotion that involves public participation and collaboration, has been posited as a promising approach to reach diverse or marginalised populations. This scoping review aims to explore the involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other First Nations and Indigenous peoples internationally in citizen science in health-related studies. While current health promotion in Indigenous communities is already strongly embedded in participatory approaches, we sought to examine whether citizen science methodologies have been used in health promotion and see what it could add.

Early-branching eukaryotes are associated with the early branching events during eukaryogenesis. Understanding their genomic diversity and evolution can provide insights into the origin and speciation of eukaryotes. Ciliated protists (ciliates) are a group of early-branching unicellular eukaryotes with a high biodiversity, making them excellent models for evolutionary studies.

This study investigated fermentation-induced alterations in the structural and physicochemical properties of Brassica rapa L. polysaccharide (BRL-G) and their effects on gut microbiota composition. An in vitro continuous bioreactor system was used, combining ultrasound-microwave-assisted enzymatic extraction with fecal microbiota co-culture.
