Article Abstract

Background: In intensive care units, patients are frequently unable to take oral drugs because of orotracheal intubation or sedation.

Local Problem: Adverse events occurred during the administration of drugs by feeding tube. This study assessed the impact of implementing good practice guidelines by a clinical pharmacist on the prescription and administration of drugs through feeding tubes.

Methods: Nonconformity of drug prescription and administration in patients with feeding tubes was assessed before and after implementation of good practice guidelines in the intensive care unit of a large teaching hospital. Data were collected from medical records and interviews with physicians and nurses using a standardized form. Assessment of prescription nonconformity included compatibility of a drug's absorption site with the administration route. Assessment of administration nonconformity included the preparation method.

Results: The analysis included 288 prescriptions and 80 administrations before implementation and 385 prescriptions and 211 administrations after implementation. Prescriptions in which the drug's absorption site was not compatible with the administration route decreased significantly after implementation (19.8% vs 7.5%, P < .01). Administration nonconformity decreased significantly in regard to crushing tablets and opening capsules (51.2% vs 4.3%, P < .01) and the solvent used (67.1% vs 3.5%, P < .01). Simultaneous mixing of drugs in the same syringe did not decrease significantly (71.2% vs 62.9%, P = .17).

Conclusion: Implementation of good practice guidelines by a multidisciplinary team in the intensive care unit significantly improved practices for administering crushed, opened, and dissolved oral forms of drugs by feeding tube.

Water eutrophication has emerged as a pervasive ecological challenge worldwide. To realize the resource utilization of waste and nutrients, a novel rape straw-derived biochar-calcium alginate composite (M-CA-RBC) immobilized Pseudomonas sp. H6 was synthesized to simultaneously remove phosphate (PO) and ammonium (NH) from distillery wastewater.

In order to promote the development and application of low-carbon cement varieties and the recycling of industrial solid waste, this study used iron tailings and fluorogypsum to prepare iron-rich belite-sulfoaluminate cement (I-BCSA). The suitable conditions for the preparation of I-BCSA in this system were with an excessive addition of 6 wt% of SO in the raw meal, at a calcination temperature of 1250 °C for 1.5 h, and an added-gypsum content of 15 wt%.

Background: Allopurinol, the most prescribed urate-lowering drug, is a known cause of severe cutaneous adverse reactions. We aimed to develop and validate a model to assess the risk of allopurinol-induced severe cutaneous adverse reactions in adults newly prescribed allopurinol.

Methods: In this retrospective new-user cohort study, we developed and validated a prognostic model using primary care, hospitalisation, and mortality data extracted from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) primary care database, for the period Jan 1, 2001, to March 29, 2021.

Diclofenac sodium (DS), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for treating inflammatory pain, has a short elimination half-life, which can lead to fluctuations in blood drug concentration. Therefore, developing sustained-release formulations is necessary to meet clinical needs. Biodegradable polymers exhibit excellent sustained-release properties and good biocompatibility, making them suitable for processing into nanofiber-based drug delivery systems via electrospinning technology.

Amino acids are natural organic biomolecules with higher biocompatibility and are crucial for life reactions. Biomolecule-dependent functionality of metallic nanoparticles can tailor them with more effectiveness and biocompatibility. This study was designed to assess the histopathological aspect of gold nanoconjugates (AuNCs) exposure for antioxidant potential in albino mice (Mus Musculus).
