Thalassemia is one of southern China's most common inherited disorders. Little is known about the genotypes of thalassemia in children in Jiangxi Province, the People's Republic of China (PRC). Two thousand, nine hundred and fifty-two children with suspected thalassemia were recruited from August 2016 to December 2020 at the Jiangxi Provincial Children's Hospital, Nanchang, PRC. Reverse dot-blot hybridization was used to detect α- and β-thalassemia (α- and β-thal) genotypes. A rare mutation was detected using gap-polymerase chain reaction (gap-PCR) and gene sequencing. The overall distribution of thalassemia (1534 cases) was 51.96%, and the detection rate of α-thal (616 cases), β-thal (888 cases) and concurrent α- and β-thalassemias (30 cases) was 20.86, 30.08, and 1.02%, respectively. A rare α-thal genotype, -α/- - (Southeast Asian), was identified. Seventy-eight cases of severe β-thal were detected, accounting for 8.78% of the cases, including 56 double heterozygous cases and 22 cases that were homozygous. Both α- and β-thalassemias are widely distributed in the children of Jiangxi Province. Thalassemia genetic testing is essential to establish a comprehensive thalassemia prevention program and improve public education.

Background And Aims: Biliary atresia (BA) is a severe neonatal cholangiopathy characterized by progressive inflammation and fibrosis. We aimed to systematically investigate BA pathology using integrated multi-omics.
Methods: Multi-omics integration of BA and control livers revealed sphingolipid dysregulation.

The escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance is exacerbated by delayed diagnostics and improper antibiotics use, underscoring an urgent demand for rapid, versatile AST tools to support evidence-based prescribing. In this study, we present an innovative, generalizable phenotypic AST approach by quantifying bacterial gDNA copy number variations (CNVs) following 0.5-h-brief culturing with antibiotic exposure, termed spatially encapsulated emulsions (SEE)-phAST.

Hydrogen peroxide (HO) is a key signaling molecule in tumor progression, making its real-time detection vital for elucidating the complex mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis. Herein, we report a rationally colorimetric sensing platform for rapid tumor screening, leveraging the bifunctional enzyme-like activity of a heterostructured h-NiO/CoO/C nanosphere. Notably, by activating electron structure reconstruction with abundant oxygen vacancies and utilizing a dual-non-precious-metal method, h-NiO/CoO/C nanosphere enhances catalytic performance beyond the limitations of single-non-precious-metal-doped nanomaterials (e.

Background: Cognitive frailty, a novel construct integrating cognitive and physical deficits, is increasingly recognized in aging research.
Aims: This study aimed to examine the associations between cognitive frailty and cardiometabolic risk in two nationally representative cohorts from China and the United Kingdom.
Methods: We analyzed data from 7,628 participants in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and 4,703 participants from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), all aged ≥ 50 years.
