Background: The study aimed to explore risk factors for bronchial mucus plugs (BMP) formation in children with adenovirus (AdV) pneumonia.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on children with AdV pneumonia who underwent bronchoscopy from January 2019 to December 2019. Children were divided into the BMP group and the control group, depending on whether BMP was formed or not. The clinical information and treatment proposals of the two groups of children were counted and analyzed via multiple logistic regression analysis, ROC curve analysis, and correlation analysis.
Results: Among 453 patients with AdV pneumonia, 185 (40.84%) were in the BMP group. Among all the cases, there were 188 patients with a single AdV infection, including 64 (34.04%) in the BMP group and 124 (65.96%) in the control group. The incidence of dyspnea, poor spirits, mixed infections, and other symptoms in the BMP group was higher than in the control group. Children in the BMP group had a longer heat range. C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer (DD), and AdV load levels were higher in the MBP group. AdV load, coinfection, DD, heat range, and LDH were independent risk factors for BMP, among which AdV load was the most significant (AUC = 0.819). AdV load was positively correlated with other risk factors, respectively. AdV load and heat range were independent risk factors for BMP patients with a single AdV infection.
Conclusion: AdV load might have important clinical value in predicting BMP development in AdV pneumonia.

Purpose: The present study aimed to fabricate microneedles (MNs) for transdermal delivery of insulin. Chitosan-conjugated carboxy phenyl boronic acid polymer was synthesized and characterized to load insulin in the form of nanoparticles.
Methods: Optimized insulin nanoparticles (ILN-NPs) were loaded into MN arrays by micromolding, and the resulting MN patches were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical failure tests.

Study Objectives: Circulating non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) have been associated with impaired glucose metabolism but their modifiable determinants remain uncertain. We sought to determine the association between objectively-measured sleep disordered breathing (SDB), which is also associated with dysglycemia, and NEFA levels among community-dwelling older adults.
Methods: We analyzed 787 older adults who had total fasting and post-load NEFAs measured in 1996-1997 in the Cardiovascular Health Study and underwent polysomnography between 1995 and 1997 in the Sleep Heart Health Study.

Digital light processing (DLP) presents a promising approach for fabricating intricately designed piezoelectric components, which are essential for developing high-sensitivity piezoelectric sensor systems. However, the inherent layer-by-layer stacking nature of DLP induces interlayer cracking in printed ceramics, which severely deteriorates their performance. This work introduces an innovative interfacial engineering strategy to print superlattice components with exceptional piezoelectric performance.

Secondary medication delivery using large-volume smart pumps offers important workflow and safety benefits. However, the widely used linear peristaltic large-volume smart pumps rely on sufficient head-height differential for accurate secondary infusion, leading to underdelivery risks. This article outlines common clinician workarounds used to mitigate these risks, including delivering secondary medications via primary mode, programming excess volume to be infused, clamping primary lines, and using short-set primary delivery.

Malaria and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) are widely recognized infectious diseases that pose serious public health challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa and around the globe. A key factor contributing to the rise in human deaths related to malaria and HIV/AIDS is how these diseases can change the hematological parameters in people who are infected with both. Despite the significant effect of malaria and HIV/AIDS on hematological parameters, there are limited data regarding hematological profiles among malaria-HIV coinfected cases.
