Since 2001 livestock-associated methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) has increased in Denmark. Transmission to people happens by contact with livestock and mainly pigs. The prevalence in animals is not known but the bacterial reservoir is huge. The incidence of human isolates is increasing. However, LA-MRSA seems to be less virulent than non-LA-MRSA. Well-designed studies focusing on LA-MRSA infection, carrier status and risk factors in populations at risk are needed in order to provide solid data of the health consequences due to this rural, mainly occupational exposure.

Background: Innovative antibiotic discovery strategies are urgently needed to successfully combat infections caused by multi-drug-resistant bacteria.
Methods: We employed a direct screening approach to identify compounds with antimicrobial and antimicrobial helper-drug activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. We used this platform in two different strains of methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and aminoglycoside-resistant strains of to screen for antimicrobials compounds, which potentiate the activity of aminoglycoside antibiotics.

In screening for antibacterial agents from co-cultures of Mycobacterium smegmatis and microbial resources, such as actinomycetes and fungi, the known hydroxyquinone antibiotic griseorhodin A (1) was isolated from a co-culture of actinomycete strain TMPU-20A002 and M. smegmatis. Compound 1 exhibited antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE), with minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.

Tumor surgery often leads to tumor residue, tissue defects, and drug-resistant bacterial infections, resulting in high recurrence rates and chronic wounds. In this study, an injectable hydrogel was synthesized using glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride-chitosan (GCh) and formylbenzoic acid-modified chrysomycin A (CA)-loaded F127 micelles (F127FA-CA). The formation of the hydrogel is achieved through Schiff base conjugation, which occurs between the amino groups present in GCh and the aldehyde groups located on the micelle surfaces.

The global proliferation of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), highlights the urgent need for innovative antivirulence strategies. The redundancy and multiplicity of virulence factors produced by S. aureus necessitate interventions capable of concurrently targeting multiple virulence mechanisms.
