A series of arylnaphthalimides were designed and synthesized to overcome the dose-limiting cytotoxicity of N-acetylated metabolites arising from amonafide, the prototypical antitumour naphthalimide whose biomedical properties have been related to its ability to intercalate the DNA and poison the enzyme Topoisomerase II. Thus, these arylnaphthalimides were first evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against two tumour cell lines and for their antitopoisomerase II in vitro activities, together with their ability to intercalate the DNA in vitro and also through docking modelization. Then, the well-known DNA damage response in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was employed to critically evaluate whether these novel compounds can damage the DNA in vivo. By performing all these assays we conclude that the 5-arylsubstituted naphthalimides not only keep but also improve amonafide's biological activities.

Reperfusion arrhythmia (RA) poses a significant risk to the prognosis of patients undergoing extracorporeal circulation cardiac surgery, and its occurrence closely linked to disturbances in myocardial electrical conduction. Our prior research indicated that ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) affects the localization of connexin 43 (Cx43) at the intercalated discs (IDs) by inducing depolymerization of microtubules, resulting in myocardial electrical conduction abnormalities in rats. Although sevoflurane preconditioning (SPC) has demonstrated considerable protective effects on ischemic myocardium, the underlying mechanisms remain inadequately understood.

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized via a modified low-temperature Hummer's method and incorporated into a poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix to fabricate PEO/GO nanocomposite thin films using a casting technique. This work explores how GO incorporation affects the structural and optical properties of PEO, with emphasis on its suitability for optical switching and other optoelectronic applications. The films were prepared with varying GO concentrations and characterized using XRD, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and other standard techniques.

While TiS has been extensively studied for its ability to intercalate alkali metals like Li or Na, the higher homologue ZrS was studied only sparsely. Furthermore, an influence of different coordinating and noncoordinating electrolyte solvents on cyclability as well as the structural changes of the host structures had been observed for different active materials. In this study, we therefore investigated the intercalation mechanism of Na ions into layered 1T-ZrS using electrolytes with solvents of different coordination strengths toward Na, namely sodium trifluoromethanesulfonimide in ethylene carbonate and diethyl carbonate (1:1, EC/DEC) and sodium triflate in bis(2-methoxyethyl) ether (diglyme).
