The Drosophila Malpighian tubules (MpTs) serve as a functional equivalent of the mammalian renal tubules. The MpTs are composed of two pairs of epithelial tubes that bud from the midgut-hindgut boundary during embryogenesis. The MpT primordia grow, elongate and migrate through the body cavity to assume their final position and shape. The stereotypic pattern of MpT migration is regulated by multiple intrinsic and extrinsic signals, many of which are still obscure. In this work, we implicate the TALE-class homeoprotein Homothorax (Hth) in MpT patterning. We show that in the absence of Hth the tubules fail to rearrange and migrate. Hth plays both autonomous and nonautonomous roles in this developmental process. Within the tubules Hth is required for convergent extension and for defining distal versus proximal cell identities. The difference between distal and proximal cell identities seems to be required for proper formation of the leading loop. Outside the tubules, wide-range mesodermal expression of Hth is required for directing anterior migration. The nonautonomous effects of Hth on MpT migration can be partially attributed to its effects on homeotic determination along the anterior posterior axis of the embryo and to its effects on stellate cell (SC) incorporation into the MpT.

In future traffic environments dominated by highly autonomous vehicles (AVs), pedestrians may face challenges in accurately interpreting AV behavior, thereby potentially increasing the risk of pedestrian-AV interactions. External human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) have been proposed to facilitate communication between AVs and pedestrians; however, comprehensive evaluations using objective data from real-world interactions are limited. This study developed a systematic evaluation framework grounded in the ISO 9241-11 standard, integrating four key indicators: decision accuracy, comprehensibility, decision efficiency, and perceived safety.

Surgical instrument segmentation plays an important role in robotic autonomous surgical navigation systems as it can accurately locate surgical instruments and estimate their posture, which helps surgeons understand the position and orientation of the instruments. However, there are still some problems affecting segmentation accuracy, like insufficient attention to the edges and center of surgical instruments, insufficient usage of low-level feature details, etc. To address these issues, a lightweight network for surgical instrument segmentation in gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy (GESur_Net) is proposed.

3D shape defect detection plays an important role in autonomous industrial inspection. However, accurate detection of anomalies remains challenging due to the complexity of multimodal sensor data, especially when both color and structural information are required. In this work, we propose a lightweight inter-modality feature prediction framework that effectively utilizes multimodal fused features from the inputs of RGB, depth and point clouds for efficient 3D shape defect detection.

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that exhibits strong carcinogenic properties and promotes breast cancer (BC) progression. Autophagic flux dysfunction is involved in Cd-induced BC progression, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, it is observed that impaired autophagic flux and metabolic reprogramming are notable features related to Cd-induced proliferation, migration, and invasion in BC cell lines, including T-47D and MCF-7 cells.

Introduction: Straw return combined with rational nitrogen (N) fertilization plays a critical role in coordinating the transformation of soil organic carbon and nitrogen availability, thereby improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), crop yield, and soil fertility. However, the dynamics of soil carbon and nitrogen fractions under straw return with varying N inputs, and their specific contributions to NUE and yield, remain unclear.
Methods: A three-year split-plot field experiment was conducted in the Tumochuan Plain Irrigation District.
