Palladium is a key catalyst invaluable to many industrial processes and fine-chemical synthesis. Although recent progress has allowed the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles with various shapes by using different techniques, the facile synthesis of Pd nanocrystals and turning them into a highly active, selective, and stable catalyst systems still remain challenging. Herein, we report the highly selective one-pot synthesis of monodisperse Pd cluster nanowires in aqueous solution; these consist of interconnected nanoparticles and may serve as highly active catalysts because of the enrichment of high index facets on the surface, including {443}, {331}, and {221} steps.

In order to enhance the elongation at break, the ablation resistant properties as well as the tensile strength of the thermal insulating materials, organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) was introduced into the short aramid fibers reinforced Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer (EPDM) based nanocomposites. The effects of OMMT content on the mechanical and ablative properties of the nanocomposites were investigated systematically. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirm that EPDM-matrix has been intercalated into OMMT interlayers after a mixing process on a two-roll mill.

We herein report a novel and facile approach to the fabrication of the superparamagnetic magnetite/poly(styrene-co-12-acryloxy-9-octadecenoic acid) nanocomposite microspheres with controllable structure via gamma-ray radiation induced inverse emulsion polymerization under room temperature and at ambient pressure. 12-Acryloxy-9-octadecenoic acid (AOA, containing part of sodium salts Na-AOA) as a surfactant can also copolymerize with the styrene. It is interesting that just by changing the added amount of styrene, the magnetic hollow spheres with different wall thickness and various sizes of core, up to the magnetic solid spheres, can be obtained.

A novel and facile approach to the preparation of paramagnetic magnetite/polystyrene nanocomposite microspheres by 60Co gamma-ray radiation-induced miniemulsion polymerization is reported. First, we modified the magnetite nanoparticles (MPs) with a Y-shaped surfactant: 12-hexanoyloxy-9-octadecenoic acid (HOA). Nanocomposite microspheres consisting of polystyrene-iron oxide nanoparticles then were prepared by the radiation-induced miniemulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of HOA-modified MPs using HOA as stabilizer.

We herein present a novel and simple synthetic strategy for fabricating multihollow superparamagnetic magnetite/polystyrene nanocomposite microspheres via water-in-oil-in-water double emulsions. Amphipathic magnetite nanoparticles surface-modified with oleic acid act as an oil-soluble emulsifier and sodium dodecyl sulfate acts as a water-soluble surfactant in the system. The final products were thoroughly characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy, which showed the formation of multihollow magnetite/polystyrene nanocomposite microspheres.

Emulsion polymerization of styrene was carried out using two kinds of alkyl polyoxyethylene ether sulfosuccinates as surfactant: disodium cetyl polyoxyethylene (25) ether sulfosuccinate (CPS) and octyl-phenol polyoxyethylene (10) ether sulfosuccinate (OPS). In experiments, the incorporation of CPS or OPS inside styrene droplets and polystyrene particles was clearly observed. Based on this phenomenon, multihollow polymer spheres are prepared in a one-step reaction and this strongly supports the proposed incorporation mechanism.
