Background: Doxorubicin (DOX), a classical chemotherapeutic agent, faces significant limitations because of its well-documented risk of inducing cardiotoxicity. Effective prevention of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity is urgently needed. Given that alterations in metabolic pathways have been observed in both cardiovascular diseases and cancer, targeting specific metabolic pathways may offer dual benefits by mitigating DOX-induced cardiotoxicity while simultaneously enhancing its antitumor efficacy.

Biomolecular condensates formed by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) play a crucial role in organizing biochemical processes within living cells. The phase transition of these condensates from a functional liquid-like state to a pathological gel-like or solid-like state is believed to be linked to cellular dysfunction and various diseases. The integration of inorganic materials with biological machinery to convert plastics into fuels offers a promising strategy to alleviate environmental pollution and energy crisis. Herein, we develop a type of hybrid living material via biomineralization of CdS onto Shewanella oneidensis-based biofilm, which is capable of sustainable hydrogen production from poly(lactic acid) (PLA) wastes under daylight. We reveal that the formed biofilm microstructure provides an independent anaerobic microenvironment that simultaneously supports cellular viability, maintains hydrogenase activity, and preserves the functional stability of CdS, giving rise to the efficient plastic-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency as high as 3751 μmol H g-1 PLA.

In recent years, developing artificial cells of higher complexity has emerged as being key to simulating advanced life behaviors, among which coacervate microdroplets are a promising kind of model artificial cell. Constructing simple coacervate systems which can subsequently achieve specific responses to environmental stimuli to form coacervate microdroplet communities are fundamental for studying the interactions between liquid-liquid phase separated molecules and the way such interactions determine material properties, composition and phase behavior. Herein, we propose a membrane-free artificial cell based on recombinant spidroin, NT2RepCT, which utilizes the complex structure of spidroin to provide coacervate microdroplets with a unique population morphology in response to environmental stimuli.
