Article Synopsis
  • C-type lectins (CTLs) are crucial pattern recognition receptors that play a role in immune regulation, with the CTL5 gene in silkworms showing promise in bacterial clearance during larval development.
  • The study found that CTL5 expression varies in response to infections and the molting hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone, primarily in the larvae and adult moths.
  • Recombinant CTL5 proteins can bind to immune cells and pathogens, increasing hemocyte phagocytosis and stimulating the expression of immune-related genes, suggesting CTL5 might enhance the immune response by acting as an opsonin.

The early-diverging eudicot order Trochodendrales contains only two monospecific genera, Tetracentron and Trochodendron. Although an extensive fossil record indicates that the clade is perhaps 100 million years old and was widespread throughout the Northern Hemisphere during the Paleogene and Neogene, the two extant genera are both narrowly distributed in eastern Asia. Recent phylogenetic analyses strongly support a clade of Trochodendrales, Buxales, and Gunneridae (core eudicots), but complete plastome analyses do not resolve the relationships among these groups with strong support.
