Defective viral genomes (DVGs) are fragments derived from defective interfering particles (DIPs) that form during viral replication. They play important roles by interfering with complete virus replication and regulating host immune responses. Advances in high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and bioinformatic technology have significantly improved the ability to identify DIPs and DVGs.

Aims: Pathological left ventricular (LV) remodelling following aortic stenosis (AS) confers high risk for heart failure and significantly decreases survival. This study aims to introduce a new wearable acoustic cardiography (ACG) device measuring electromechanical activation time (EMAT) to identify the regression of cardiac remodelling in AS patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
Methods And Results: This prospective cohort study consecutively enrolled patients with severe symptomatic AS who underwent successful TAVR.
Oncogene amplification is a key driver of cancer pathogenesis and is often mediated by extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA). EcDNA amplifications are associated with increased pathogenicity of cancer and poorer outcomes for patients. EcDNA can be detected accurately using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) when cells are arrested in metaphase.

The washing process generates a large amount of wastewater, which urgently requires innovation and upgrading of the processing technology. This study investigated the changes in gel properties, endogenous enzyme activities, flavor characteristics and metabolic profile during mechanical pre-dehydration of minced fish, compared to the traditional washing process, in order to understand the relationship between changes in endogenous components and processing quality.

Background: Statin use is proven to be effective in lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and reducing risk of recurrent myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality in individuals with established cardiovascular disease (CVD). We used medication dispensed data (e.g.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFImportance: In the original validation, the Predicting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Events (PREVENT) equations demonstrated good discrimination and calibration among racial and ethnic groups, but the model performance among Asian and Hispanic disaggregated subgroups has not been previously described.
Objective: To assess the performance of the PREVENT equations by race and ethnicity, including disaggregated Asian and Hispanic subgroups.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This was an electronic health record-based retrospective cohort study of primary care patients aged 30 to 79 years across Sutter Health, a large integrated health system in Northern California, from January 2010 to September 2023.
Salt-sensitive hypertension (SSH) is closely associated with arterial inflammation, yet its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we utilized deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt-induced hypertensive mice, which exhibited elevated blood pressure and significant arterial inflammation. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) identified interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) and its downstream targets, signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT), as key regulators of these inflammatory changes.

Recent research has focused on exploring its nutritional and metabolomic profiles and associated health benefits. Due to the improvement in detection and quantification techniques for health-promoting compounds and their activities, the number of studies has increased significantly.

Objective: To investigate if phacogoniotomy is noninferior to phacotrabeculectomy for advanced PACG with cataract at 2 years.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This multicenter, noninferiority, randomized clinical trial took place in 7 ophthalmology centers in China.
Importance: The safety and effectiveness of combining surgical peripheral iridectomy (SPI) with goniosynechialysis (GSL) and goniotomy (GT) vs trabeculectomy for intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction remains unknown.
Objective: To investigate the safety and effectiveness at 1 year of SPI + GSL + GT vs trabeculectomy in advanced primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) without cataract.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This noninferiority randomized clinical trial was conducted at 8 tertiary eye centers in China.

Extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) amplifications are prevalent drivers of human cancers. We show that ecDNAs exhibit elevated structural variants leading to gene fusions that produce oncogene fusion transcripts. The long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) gene is the most recurrent structural variant across cancer genomes, with fusions arising most frequently on ecDNA.

We describe contextual factors affecting the implementation and outcomes of a successful email 'nudge' aimed at reducing post-operative opioid prescribing, with the goal of informing future implementation and dissemination efforts.
Methods: Between October 2021-September 2022, we sent email nudges to general, orthopedic, and obstetrics/gynecology surgeons at 19 hospitals in a large integrated healthcare system in California whose patients had post-operative opioid prescriptions that exceeded guideline-recommended quantities.
Background: Vascular calcification is common and progressive in patients with chronic kidney disease. However, the risk factors associated with the progression of vascular calcification in patients receiving maintenance dialysis have not been fully elucidated. Here, we aimed to evaluate vascular calcification and identify the factors associated with its progression in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis.

Multidimensional CT (MDCT) is the main imaging mortality for the diagnosis of SLT but it enhances the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy. Our study aimed to use an innovative wearable acoustic cardiography (ACG) device to diagnose SLT as an alternative option.

However, the washing process significantly increases wastewater discharge from factories, thus raising environmental concerns and highlighting the need for more sustainable methods of surimi production. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of improving the quality of unwashed freshwater surimi by mechanical pre-dehydration and to explore the changes in gelling properties and physicochemical characteristics during frozen storage.

Subsequently, their physicochemical and functional properties, as well as air-water interface adsorption behavior were investigated. Results demonstrated that the solubility and emulsifying properties of these proteins were significantly affected by pH, with minimum values observed near their isoelectric point (3.

Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) are common in cancer and drive oncogene amplification, dysregulated gene expression and intratumoural heterogeneity through random segregation during cell division. Distinct ecDNA sequences, termed ecDNA species, can co-exist to facilitate intermolecular cooperation in cancer cells.

High structural stability, dual organic-inorganic nature, and tunability in chemical functionality are promising characteristics of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs). These properties assist Zr-MOFs in extending their applications in various fields, especially adsorptive removal of pollutants. In this work, two well-known Zr-MOFs (UiO-66(Zr) and MIL-140(Zr) with the formula ZrO(OH)(BDC), HBDC is benzene 1,4-dicarboxylic acid) were synthesized and decorated with a dihydrotetrazine functional group through postsynthesis linker exchange (PSLE).
