Acetylene hydrochlorination is one of the main catalytic routes for vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production, in particular for coal-rich regions, with mercury or noble metal chlorides as conventional catalysts. In recent years, there is a fast-growing transition from metal-based catalysts to metal-free materials for acetylene hydrochlorination because of strict environmental regulation and strong motivation for sustainable development, and this trend is clearly exemplified in a series of studies on carbon, boron nitride, graphitic carbon nitride, and ionic liquids, which garnered significant interest as catalysts in acetylene hydrochlorination. In this review, the current status and development of these metal-free catalysts are summarized with a focus on the nature of active sites, doping effects, reaction mechanism, and optimization methods, in order to provide a timely account.

It is well known that the performance of some key catalytic reactions has a strong dependence on metal catalyst surfaces. In the current work, this concept is further extended to the CuPd alloy-supported zirconium oxide inverse catalyst for CO hydrogenation to methanol. A combined DFT and microkinetic simulation study reveal that both the metal substrate surface and the precise exposed Cu or Pd metal atoms on the substrate have a pivotal influence on the catalytic mechanism and performance of the inverse catalyst for CO hydrogenation to methanol.

The neurotoxic α-synuclein (α-syn) oligomers play an important role in the occurrence and development of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the factors affecting α-syn generation and neurotoxicity remain unclear. We here first found that thrombomodulin (TM) significantly decreased in the plasma of PD patients and brains of A53T α-syn mice, and the increased TM in primary neurons reduced α-syn generation by inhibiting transcription factor p-c-jun production through Erk1/2 signaling pathway. Moreover, TM decreased α-syn neurotoxicity by reducing the levels of oxidative stress and inhibiting PAR1-p53-Bax signaling pathway.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) plays an important role in the neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but some factors promoting Aβ generation and Aβ oligomer (Aβo) neurotoxicity remain unclear. We here find that the levels of ArhGAP11A, a Ras homology GTPase-activating protein, significantly increase in patients with AD and amyloid precursor protein (APP)/presenilin-1 (PS1) mice. Reducing the ArhGAP11A level in neurons not only inhibits Aβ generation by decreasing the expression of APP, PS1, and β-secretase (BACE1) through the RhoA/ROCK/Erk signaling pathway but also reduces Aβo neurotoxicity by decreasing the expressions of apoptosis-related p53 target genes.
