Pioneer transcription factors have the unique ability to open chromatin at enhancers to implement new cell fates. They also provide epigenetic memory through demethylation of enhancer DNA, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We now show that the pioneer paired box 7 (PAX7) triggers DNA demethylation using two replication-dependent mechanisms, including direct PAX7 interaction with the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase (UHRF1)-DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) complex that is responsible for DNA methylation maintenance.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), are emerging pollutants ubiquitous in the environment, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the toxicological effects of PBDEs on sturgeon embryos, focusing on BDE-47, a representative PBDEs homologues. Siberian sturgeon embryos were exposed to BDE-47, revealing significant reductions in hatching and survival rates and the occurrence of developmental abnormalities.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater was used to track the evolution and emergence of variant lineages and gauge infection levels in the community, informing appropriate public health responses without relying solely on clinical testing. As more sublineages were discovered, it increased the difficulty in identifying distinct variants in a mixed population sample, particularly those without a known lineage. Here, we compare the sequencing technology from Illumina and from Oxford Nanopore Technologies, in order to determine their efficacy at detecting variants of differing abundance, using 248 wastewater samples from various Quebec and Ontario cities.

Therefore, this study explored the effects of continuous dietary exposure to 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) (40 and 4000 ng/g) on the feeding in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and the underlying mechanism. To investigate the mechanisms of BDE-47 on hepatotoxicity in fish, this study examined the effects of dietary exposure to BDE-47 (40 and 4000 ng/g) on carp for 42 days. The results showed that BDE-47 significantly increased carp's condition factor and hepatosomatic index. Pathological results revealed unclear hepatic cord structure, hepatocytes swelling, cellular vacuolization, and inflammatory cell infiltration in the hepatopancreas of carp.

Genetic sexing strains (GSS) are an important tool in support of sterile insect technique (SIT) applications against insect pests and disease vectors. The yet unknown temperature-sensitive lethal (tsl) gene and the recently identified white pupae (wp) gene have been used as selectable markers in the most successful GSS developed so far, the Ceratitis capitata (medfly) VIENNA 8 GSS. The Yangtze sturgeon () has recently been declared extinct in the wild, and artificial breeding is the only means to protect its germplasm resources, but it has difficulty in weaning (from live prey to artificial food). Previous data suggested that activation of endocannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) was necessary for the orexigenic effect of Ghrelin in rodents, but the information is limited in teleosts. To investigate the feeding regulation pathway of Ghrelin and CB1 in Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii), this study first identified the Ghrelin (345 bp, complete coding sequence) and Ghrelin receptor (GHSR, 500 bp, partial coding sequence) sequences, and then detected their tissue distribution patterns, which showed that Ghrelin is mainly distribution in peripheral tissues, while GSHR is mainly in different brain divisions. Besides, the qPCR before and after feeding showed that the mRNA expressions of Ghrelin and GHSR were inhibited after feeding in telencephalon, diencephalon and mesencephalon.

In this paper, we reported an integrated method to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses of different orders based on a reconfigurable silicon micro-ring resonator-coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Under proper operating conditions, the device can produce Fano resonances with a peak-to-valley extinction ratio of above 20 dB. UWB monocycle and doublet signals with picosecond pulse widths are produced when the microring resonator is modulated by square and Gaussian electrical pulses, respectively.

Background: Québec was the Canadian province most impacted by COVID-19, with 401,462 cases as of September 24th, 2021, and 11,347 deaths due mostly to a very severe first pandemic wave. In April 2020, we assembled the Coronavirus Sequencing in Québec (CoVSeQ) consortium to sequence SARS-CoV-2 genomes in Québec to track viral introduction events and transmission within the province.
