Motivation: The goal of motif discovery is to detect novel, unknown, and important signals from biology sequences. In most models, the importance of a motif is equal to the sum of the similarity of every single position. In 2006, Song et al.

Liver tissues around hydatid from 8 patients with cystic echinococcosis were observed by transmission electron microscopy, normal hepatic tissues of 6 cases were used as control. The results demonstrated predominant atrophy and necrosis of hepatocytes. These changes seem to be the major hepatic lesion in cystic echinococcosis.

It aims at investigating the expression and distribution of the Osteopontin (OPN) in the pericyst of human hepatic Echinococcus granulosus and their related significances. Sixty pericysts excised by "sub-adventitial cystectomy" were studied. OPN was detected in 80% (48/60) of cysts by Western blotting and distributed in the side of "exocyst" layer directing to the parasite, also macrophages were identified in the vicinity of OPN by immunohistochemistry staining.

Objective: To propose a criterion and its significance of clinical classification of hepatic hydatidosis complicated with biliary fistula.
Methods: 47 hepatic hydatidosis with biliary fistula cases who were given a subadventitial pericystectomy were observed from 2000 to 2005 in a retrospective study. The methods included observation of the different anatomic features of hepatic hydatidosis complicated with biliary fistula during the surgical operation and evaluation of the curative effect.
The interleukin-12 (IL-12) cytokine induces the differentiation of naive T cells to the T helper cell type 1 (Th1) phenotype and is integral to the pathogenesis of Th1-mediated immunologic disorders. A more recently discovered IL-12 family member, IL-23, shares the p40 protein subunit with IL-12 and plays a critical role in the generation of effector memory T cells and IL-17-producing T cells. We introduce a novel compound, STA-5326, that down-regulates both IL-12 p35 and IL-12/IL-23 p40 at the transcriptional level, and inhibits the production of both IL-12 and IL-23 cytokines.

Objective: To construct small interfering RNA (siRNA) expression vectors targeting human MAGE3 gene and to observe the effects of gene silencing of MAGE3 by RNA interference on location and metastasis of lung carcinoma cells.
Methods: MAGE3 mRNA targeted hairpin siRNA was devised and the oligonucleotide strands of DNA fragments encoding the above siRNA were synthesized. After annealing of the complementary strands, the DNA fragments were cloned into pSUPERneoGFP, followed by amplification and DNA sequencing, then transfected into human lung carcinoma NCI-H446.

Six polyurethane-urea model hard segments (PUUMHS) were prepared by a solution method based, respectively, on two isocyanates: 4,4'-methylene-diphenyl-diisocyanate (MDI), 4,4'-methylene-dicyclohexyl diisocyanate (HMDI) and three amine chain extenders: ethylene diamine (EDA), methylene-bis-ortho-chloroaniline (MOCA), 2,4-diamino-3,5-dimethylsuphylchlorobenzene (DDSCB). FTIR was used to study their spectroscopic characterization. The main FTIR bands of the six samples were assigned and compared.

Methods: Fifty-two cases suffering from premature ejaculation and redundant prepuce were treated with circumcision. They were asked to fill the investigating questionnaire about the changes of ejaculatory latent period, patients' and their wives' satisfaction with sexual life before and after the treatment.
Aim: To study the influence of HBcAg on the expression of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta1) in liver tissue of low-grade chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients.
Methods: The expression of TGF-beta1 and HBcAg in liver samples from 93 low-grade CHB patients was detected by immunohistochemistry and valuated by semi-quantitative scoring.
Results: In the 93 low-grade CHB patients, HBcAg was expressed in cell plasma but not in the liver tissue.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of age-related maculopathy (AMD) in Shanghai residents older than 50 years.
Methods: 1023 individuals were examined in the years 2002 and 2003 for clinical and subjective signs of dry and exudative AMD. A interview concerning clinical symptoms of AMD as also a complete eye exam was performed.

Objective: To investigate the formative mechanisms of the fibrous capsule around hepatic and splenic hydatid cyst.
Methods: HE stain was used to observe the histopathologic changes of the fibrous capsules around hepatic and splenic hydatid cysts and the adjacent parenchyma. The expression of collagen IV, fibronectin (FN), laminin (LN), transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) were detected by using immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization in fibrous capsules around 40 hepatic hydatid cysts and 15 splenic hydatid cysts including adjacent parenchyma.
Purpose: To investigate (1) the mechanism of blood-retinal barrier breakdown induced by protein kinase C (PKC) activation (2) the relationship between PKC activation and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in 2-week streptozotocin-induced diabetes.
Methods: Retinal PKC activities, retinal and vitreous concentration of VEGF protein were conducted by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA). Retinal VEGF mRNA expression was analyzed by semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Aims: The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) caused a large outbreak of atypical pneumonia in Beijing, China from early March 2003. We report the pathological features from three patients who died of SARS.
Methods: Autopsies were performed on three patients who died 9-15 days after the onset of the illness, and the clinical and laboratory features reviewed.
Objective: To study the pathological characteristics of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and its relationship to clinical manifestation.
Methods: Tissue specimens from 3 autopsies of probable SARS cases were studied by microscope, and the clinical data was reviewed.
Results: The typical pathological changes of lungs were diffuse hemorrhaging on the surface.

Objectives: To identify hepatic progenitor cells (HPCs) in patients with severe hepatitis (SH) by detecting their markers and investigate the features of their distribution and location.
Methods: Liver tissues taken from 59 SH patients were tested for the receptor of stem cell factor (c-kit), pi-class glutathione S-transferase (GST-pi), cluster of differentiation 34 (CD34), cytokeratin 19 (CK19), cytokeratin 18 (CK18) and alpha fetoprotein (AFP) by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Meanwhile, 58 patients with acute or chronic hepatitis were also detected to act as controls.

S-(2-Furanylmethyl)tetramethylenesulfonium hexafluorophosphate, S-(2-thienylmethyl)tetramethylenesulfonium hexafluorophosphate, S-(3-thienylmethyl)tetramethylenesulfonium hexafluorophosphate, and S-(N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-2-pyrrolylmethyl)tetramethylenesulfonium hexafluorophosphate have been conveniently prepared from the corresponding alcohols. These stable heterobenzylic sulfonium salts participate in palladium-catalyzed Stille cross-couplings with organostannanes. All but the last mentioned sulfonium salt are also active participants in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with boronic acids and organozinc halides.
