This study investigated the effect of continuous temperature transitions on the anaerobic digestion (AD) performance of cattle manure (CM) and microbial response mechanisms. Experiments were conducted in a completely-stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for over 390 days with a fine 3 °C gradient from 35 °C to 65 °C. The results showed that AD achieved optimal performance at R47 (47 °C).

Background: Abnormal lipid profiles are a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and childhood obesity has been linked to changes in lipid metabolism in adults. However, the relationship between childhood obesity and adult lipid profiles, as well as the potential sex differences, remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between childhood obesity and abnormal lipid metabolism in young adults, specifically focusing on sex differences.

Background: Neutrophils interact with tumor cells, potentially exacerbating cancer progression. Additionally, decreased albumin levels are a marker of poor cancer prognosis. The neutrophil-percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) has been used for prognostic assessment in non-cancerous diseases, but its relationship with mortality risk in cancer patients has not been explored.

Background: Given that only a small subset of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (aNSCLC) benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), the effectiveness of ICIs is often compromised by the complex interplay within the tumor microenvironment (TME).

Objectives: To identify predictive biomarkers associated with ICI resistance at a multi-omics spatial level.

Design: A total of eight aNSCLC patients who received first-line anti-programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) monoclonal antibody camrelizumab at Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute between 2021 and 2022 were included in the discovery cohort.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of glucose levels on admission, on the risk of 30-day major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and to assess the difference in outcome between ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients.

Methods: This study was a post hoc analysis of the Acute Coronary Syndrome Quality Improvement in Kerala Study, and 13,398 participants were included in the final analysis. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between glucose levels on admission and the risk of 30-day MACEs, adjusting for potential confounders.

Article Synopsis
  • Immunotherapy, particularly immune checkpoint inhibitors, has changed cancer treatment, but many patients experience resistance to these therapies due to factors like tumor metabolism and lactic acid production.
  • The study focuses on SLC16A3 (MCT4), a transporter that helps remove lactic acid from tumor cells, and finds that high levels of glycolysis and SLC16A3 are linked to reduced effectiveness of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy and poor immune cell activity.
  • By inhibiting SLC16A3, researchers were able to lower glycolytic activity and lactic acid production in tumors, improving the immune response and enhancing the efficacy of immunotherapy.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly observed in non-obese individuals. The ZJU (Zhejiang University) index has been established as a new and efficient tool for detecting NAFLD, but the relationship between the ZJU index and NAFLD within non-obese individuals still remains unclear.

Methods: A evaluation was undertaken using data from a health assessment database by the Wenzhou Medical Center.

Previous studies in patients with hypertension have demonstrated that there is a U-shaped association between HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) and the risk of cardiovascular events in male patients with hypertension. However, to the best of our knowledge, the relationship between HDL-C and intensive blood pressure control in specific cardiovascular events has never been investigated. To fill this knowledge gap, the authors analyzed the relationship between HDL-C levels and cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients within the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT).

With the accelerated construction of biogas plants, the amount of biogas residues are expanding. Composting has been widely implemented to deal with biogas residues. Aeration regulation is the main factor affecting the post-composting treatment of biogas residues as high-quality fertilizer or soil amendment.

The anaerobic digestion efficiency and methane production of straw was limited by its complex composition and structure. In this study, rice straw (RS), cellulose, and hemicellulose were used as raw materials to study biogas production performance and changes in the volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Further, microbial communities and genetic functions were analyzed separately for each material.
