The four compounds BaGa(2)MQ(6) (M = Si, Ge; Q = S, Se) have been identified as a new series of IR nonlinear optical (NLO) materials and are promising for practical applications. They are isostructural and crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric polar space group R3 of the trigonal system. Their three-dimensional framework is composed of corner-sharing (Ga/M)Q(4) (M = Si, Ge; Q = S, Se) tetrahedra with Ba(2+) cations in the cavities.

The development of ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals demands optical materials with wide energy band gaps. Here we report first-principles studies on the electronic structures in several UV NLO borates with representative structures. Combined with model analysis, we find that the oxygen non-bonding 2p orbitals play an important role on the top of valence bands.

Understanding the function of individual microRNA (miRNA) species in mice would require the production of hundreds of loss-of-function strains. To accelerate analysis of miRNA biology in mammals, we combined recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors with miRNA 'tough decoys' (TuDs) to inhibit specific miRNAs. Intravenous injection of rAAV9 expressing anti-miR-122 or anti-let-7 TuDs depleted the corresponding miRNA and increased its mRNA targets.

Frequency mapping methodology is an effective diagnostic tool for detection of manufacturing defects in scan chains. It analyses reflected laser modulations from toggling scan cells to localize defective scan path or scan cell. In this paper, we demonstrate experimentally that the use of solid immersion lens technology to enhance signal and spatial resolution is not a prerequisite for this technique up till 28 nm technology node.

A new ternary germanium phosphide, NaGe(3)P(3), was obtained for the first time with the use of NaP as the reactive flux. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pmc2(1). The basic structural unit is an unprecedented [Ge(3)P(7)] ring built from one Ge(P)(4) tetrahedron, one Ge(Ge)(P)(3) tetrahedron and one Ge(Ge)(P)(2) trigonal pyramid with Ge in mixed valences of 4+, 3+ and 1+.

We recently reported that two artemisinin-derived dimers (dimer primary alcohol 606 and dimer sulfone 4-carbamate 832-4) are significantly more potent in inhibiting human cytomegalovirus (CMV) replication than artemisinin-derived monomers. In our continued evaluation of the activities of artemisinins in CMV inhibition, twelve artemisinin-derived dimers and five artemisinin-derived monomers were used. Dimers as a group were found to be potent inhibitors of CMV replication.

Noninvasive systemic gene delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) has largely been impeded by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Recent studies documented widespread CNS gene transfer after intravascular delivery of recombinant adeno-associated virus 9 (rAAV9). Female preference for male fin elaborations in Poeciliid fishes may be driven by a sensory bias for increased lateral projection area (LPA) that has existed since the lineages diverged from a common ancestor. Previous research supports this hypothesis demonstrating female Poecilia latipinna, Poecilia mexicana, and Poecilia reticulata prefer males of larger body and dorsal fin size, but exhibit no such preferences when controlling for total LPA. In the current study, we further tested this hypothesis by presenting female platys, Xiphophorus variatus, with pairs of dummy males differing in: (1) body size (holding dorsal fin size constant); (2) dorsal fin size (holding body size constant); and (3) dorsal fin: body size ratio (holding total LPA constant).

Recombinant Towne CMV expressing luciferase under the control of CMV-DNA polymerase (POL) or the late pp28 (UL99) promoters were evaluated for potential application in high-throughput screening of anti-viral compounds. POL-and pp28-luciferase displayed maximal expression 48 and 72 hours post infection, respectively. The pp28-luciferase virus achieved a wider dynamic range of luciferase expression (6-7 logs) and was selected for testing of inhibition by five anti-viral compounds.

Recombinant adeno-associated viruses (rAAVs) that can cross the blood-brain-barrier and achieve efficient and stable transvascular gene transfer to the central nervous system (CNS) hold significant promise for treating CNS disorders. However, following intravascular delivery, these vectors also target liver, heart, skeletal muscle, and other tissues, which may cause untoward effects. To circumvent this, we used tissue-specific, endogenous microRNAs (miRNAs) to repress rAAV expression outside the CNS, by engineering perfectly complementary miRNA-binding sites into the rAAV9 genome.

In this paper, we present a sparse correntropy framework for computing robust sparse representations of face images for recognition. Compared with the state-of-the-art l(1)norm-based sparse representation classifier (SRC), which assumes that noise also has a sparse representation, our sparse algorithm is developed based on the maximum correntropy criterion, which is much more insensitive to outliers. In order to develop a more tractable and practical approach, we in particular impose nonnegativity constraint on the variables in the maximum correntropy criterion and develop a half-quadratic optimization technique to approximately maximize the objective function in an alternating way so that the complex optimization problem is reduced to learning a sparse representation through a weighted linear least squares problem with nonnegativity constraint at each iteration.

To prevent genetic code ambiguity due to misincorporation of amino acids into proteins, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases have evolved editing activities to eliminate intermediate or final non-cognate products. In this work we studied the different editing pathways of class Ia leucyl-tRNA synthetase (LeuRS). Different mutations and experimental conditions were used to decipher the editing mechanism, including the recently developed compound AN2690 that targets the post-transfer editing site of LeuRS.

The hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) plays an important role in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The relationship was examined between HBV antigens and IAP (inhibitor of apoptosis) family in development of HCC. The expression levels of HBV antigens (HBsAg, HBcAg, and HBxAg) and members of the IAP family (survivin, XIAP, cIAP-1, and cIAP-2) were detected immunohistochemically in tissues from 34 cases of HCC and 30 cases of liver cirrhosis.

Accumulating data support an association between hypertension and impaired fibrinolytic potential abnormalities in endogenous fibrinolysis. The present study examined whether there was an association between essential hypertension and either a polymorphism in the gene coding for t-PA or the plasma concentration of t-PA antigen. Chinese hypertensive subjects (n = 126) and normotensive controls (n = 102; sex- and age-matched with hypertensives) were recruited from among the outpatients of FuWai Hospital.
