Objective: To evaluate the detective efficacy of Chromogenic Coliform and Escherichia Coli Agar (CCEA).

Background: Accumulating evidence shows that angiotensin II (ANG II) can be generated locally in the lung tissue and may have autocrine and/or paracrine actions on the cellular level. In addition, ANG II precursor, angiotensinogen, as well as ANG II type 1 receptor (AT(1)), are also expressed in the lung tissue. Recent studies revealed that ANG II promoted acute lung injury induced by acid aspiration or sepsis, and that ANG II receptor blockade had a protective effect against acute lung injury.

Small coronary arteries (SCA) from diabetic rats exhibit enhanced peroxynitrite (ONOO(-)) formation and concurrent impairment of voltage-dependent potassium (K(v)) channel function. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a nucleic acid sequence-based amplification (NASBA) method of detecting noroviruses in artificially and naturally contaminated shellfish. We used 58 fecal samples that tested positive for noroviruses with electron microscopy (EM) to develop an NASBA assay for these viruses. Oligonucleotide primers targeting the polymerase coding region were used to amplify the viral RNA in an isothermal process that resulted in the accumulation of RNA amplicons.

The immunocytokine scFvMEL/TNF, a fusion protein composed of human tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and a single-chain Fv antibody (scFv) scFvMEL targeting the melanoma gp240 antigen, demonstrates impressive cytotoxic effects against human melanoma cell lines in vitro. Pharmacokinetic studies of 125I-scFvMEL/TNF in BALB/c mice showed that the construct clears from the circulation with a terminal-phase half-life of 17.6 hours after intravenous administration.

Solid-phase synthesis of radiometal chelator-conjugated peptides can facilitate the creation of radioactive peptide libraries to be utilized in high throughput in vivo screening of targeted nuclear-imaging agents. In this study, a new diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) derivative, 1-(p-succinamidobenzyl)- DTPA penta-t-butyl ester [DTPA(But)(5)-Bz-NH-SA], and its precursor molecule, 1-(p-aminobenzyl)- DTPA penta-t-butyl ester (DTPA(But)(5)-Bz-NH(2)), were applied to the solid-phase synthesis of DTPA-conjugated cyclic peptides containing the Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) motif with high efficiency. The resulting conjugates, DTPA-Bz-NH-SA-c(Lys-Arg-Gly-Asp-phe) [DTPA-Bz-NH-SA-c(KRGDf)] and DTPA-Bz-NHc( Glu-Arg-Gly-Asp-phe) [DTPA-Bz-NH-c(KRGDf)], demonstrated similar in vitro biologic activities as their corresponding parent peptides.

Being a foodborne virus, Rotavirus was often carried by shellfish. We have shown that short-term exposure of rat small coronary arteries (RSCAs) to high glucose enhances superoxide (O2-*) formation and impairs cAMP-mediated dilation by reducing voltage-gated K+ (Kv) channel function. However, it is not clear whether the impairment also occurs in diabetes mellitus (DM), where alternate mechanisms could mask or aggravate vasodilator dysfunction. We have developed a one-step procedure to introduce both polyethylene glycol (PEG) and the metal chelator diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) to proteins through a heterofunctional PEG precursor. The PEG precursor contains DTPA at one end and an amine-reactive isothiocyanate (SCN-) functional group at the other end. It was obtained as lyophilized powder and could be stored at 4 degrees C for several months.

Human melanoma cells can be reprogrammed to terminally differentiate and irreversibly lose proliferative capacity by appropriate pharmacological manipulation. Subtraction hybridization identified melanoma differentiation-associated gene-5 (mda-5) as a gene induced during differentiation, cancer reversion, and programmed cell death (apoptosis). This gene contains both a caspase recruitment domain and putative DExH group RNA helicase domains.
