The evolutionary process of intermuscular bones (IBs) is complex, the molecular regulatory mechanisms of their development are not clear, and even the genes involved in the evolution and development of IBs are poorly understood. In this study, comparative genomic analysis of four fish species with IBs and eleven fish species without IBs identified 106 genes that are more conservatively evolved in fish species with IBs, but highly variable in fish species without IBs. These genes are mainly involved in swimming behavior and BMP signaling pathways.

The sex determination mechanism in large-scale loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus) follows a ZZ/ZW system, with sexual differentiation regulated by both genotypic factors and temperature effects (GSD+TSD), where elevated temperatures result in a higher proportion of males. Currently, research on the sex determination mechanisms in large-scale loach is limited, and the specific gene expression profiles and the role of temperature in influencing sex remain largely unknown. This study investigated the impact of temperature on the sex ratio in cultured populations of the large-scale loach, and then identified a female-specific genetic marker by whole genome sequencing, facilitating the distinguishing of females, males, and pseudo-males within this population.

Moloney leukemia virus 10 protein (MOV10) is an interferon (IFN)-inducible RNA helicase implicated in antiviral activity against RNA viruses, yet its role in herpesvirus infection has not been investigated. After corneal inoculation of mice with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), we observed strong upregulation of both MOV10 mRNA and protein in acutely infected mouse trigeminal ganglia. MOV10 suppressed HSV-1 replication in both neuronal and non-neuronal cells, and this suppression required the N-terminus, but not C-terminal helicase domain of MOV10.

Urosepsis after upper urinary tract endoscopic lithotripsy (UUTEL) may cause uroseptic shock with high mortality, which can be prevented if early diagnosis and timely intervention are implemented with help of a diagnostic protein panel. The plasma of five rabbits of uroseptic shock and five controls was subjected to exploratory proteomics to search biomarker candidates from proteomic profiles related to uroseptic shock. Then, plasma from 21 nonsepsis and 20 urosepsis patients according to European diagnostic criteria of sepsis was enrolled in the validation study via targeted proteomics.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to worldwide efforts to understand the biological traits of the newly identified human coronavirus (HCoV-19) virus. In this mass spectrometry (MS)-based study, we reveal that out of 21 possible glycosites in the HCoV-19 spike protein (S protein), 20 are completely occupied by -glycans, predominantly of the oligomannose type. All seven glycosylation sites in human angiotensin I converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) were found to be completely occupied, mainly by complex -glycans.
