Background: In Canada, the Indigenous population is the youngest and fastest growing, yet ongoing health disparities for Indigenous peoples are widely recognized. There is a concerning lack of research on childhood disabilities and health conditions in Indigenous populations in Canada. For children with disabilities and chronic health conditions, ongoing access to rehabilitation services, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and audiology, is critical in promoting positive health and developmental outcomes.

Predictors of change in sleep disturbance in Canadian long-term care facilities: a longitudinal analysis based on interRAI assessments.

Purpose: Sleep disturbance is prevalent in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), yet there is limited understanding of individual factors predicting changes in sleep within these populations. Our objective was to determine predictors of sleep disturbance in LTCFs and investigate variation in prevalence across facilities in two Canadian provinces-New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.

Method: This retrospective longitudinal cohort study used interRAI comprehensive health assessment data from 2016 to 2021, encompassing 21,394 older adults aged ≥ 65 years across 228 LTCFs.

We report the genome sequences of two -infecting siphophages, B1VFA and V1VFA-S, isolated from Canadian agricultural soils. Both encode genes associated with plasmid maintenance, including , , and , and share similar genome architecture. These phages expand the diversity of rhizobiophages and may represent a distinct siphophage lineage.

Enhanced metagenomic surveillance for bovine respiratory disease pathogens and antimicrobial resistance by hybridization capture sequencing.

Unlabelled: Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the primary disease of cattle and is responsible for most of the antibiotic use in the beef industry, both for metaphylaxis and treatment. Infection prevention and targeted treatments would benefit from detecting and identifying bacterial pathogens and, ideally, assessing antibiotic sensitivity. Here, we report success refining targeted metagenomics by hybridization capture sequencing (CapSeq) to detect and genotype bacterial pathogens and genes for antibiotic resistance in BRD.

Objectives: The objective of this research was to implement and evaluate the Strengthening a Palliative Approach in Long-Term Care (SPA-LTC; www.spaltc.

Tongue lesions in feedlot cattle associated with ergot alkaloid consumption.

Over 1200 heavy feedlot cattle presented with severe tongue lesions during a 7-month interval. Review of the literature and discussions with colleagues revealed previous similar outbreaks had occurred in Canada and the USA, with extensive investigations conducted and no cause identified. In the current outbreak, examination of the environment, feed, water, cattle behavior, and husbandry systems were conducted, as well as diagnostic testing including necropsy, histopathology, bacteriology, virology, and toxicology.

Leptospirosis seroprevalence in Canadian beef calves at or near fall weaning.

Objective: Our objective was to estimate the seroprevalences of 6 serovars in beef calves at or near fall weaning and assess how concentrations of serovar antibody titers in weaning-age calves varied with herd vaccination programs.

Animals: Serum was collected from 1922 beef calves from 106 herds in the Canadian Cow-Calf Surveillance Network (C3SN).

Procedure: A microscopic agglutination test was used to measure antibody titers for serovars Bratislava, Canicola, Grippotyphosa, Hardjo, Icterohaemorrhagiae, and Pomona.

Objective: To evaluate whether pretreatment strategies targeting the extracellular matrix (ECM), such as DNase I and low-frequency ultrasound, enhance the efficacy of successive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against Candida albicans biofilms and to assess the effects on biofilm components.

Methods: Forty-eight-hour C. albicans (ATCC 90028) biofilms were treated under four conditions: (I) aPDT [Photodithazine (PDZ) (25 mg/L) for 20 min + Light-Emitting Diode (LED) (660 nm, 18 J/cm²)], (II) DNase+aPDT [5 min with 20 U/mL DNase I before aPDT], (III) sonication+aPDT [7 W, 170-190 J before aPDT], (IV) Dn+So+aPDT.

Attentional processes are crucial to ensure successful reading, and theories of dyslexia propose that dysfunctional attention networks may contribute to the observed reading deficits. The goals of this study were to localize a region of the frontal-eye-field (FEF) involved in both reading and attention and examine its connectivity with regions in the reading and attention networks, given the known role of the FEF in attentional processes and theorized role in reading. Background: 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and its pro-drug, capecitabine, are widely used to treat solid tumors. Patients with dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPYD) deficiency are at increased risk for severe treatment-related toxicity. Characterization of a real-world population with pediatric epilepsy point-of-care standardized data collection as a tool for healthcare quality improvement and disparities research in Canada.

Objective: Electronic health records offer the opportunity for quality-improvement (QI) initiatives addressing health disparities in epilepsy care. The Pediatric Epilepsy Outcome-Informatics Project (PEOIP) at Alberta Children's Hospital implemented point-of-care data entry into a standardized pediatric epilepsy electronic note as part of routine clinical care to support QI initiatives. Our study validated collected data by assessing the prevalence of patient characteristics, ethno-racial background, and 4 of the most common severe epilepsy syndromes: infantile epileptic spasms, Dravet, Lennox-Gastaut, and developmental epileptic encephalopathy with spike-wave action in sleep.
