Despite intensive eradication efforts, classical swine fever (CSF) remains endemic across South America, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, highlighting the need for more effective surveillance and detection methods. Reverse-transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR) is the fastest, and most sensitive assay for detecting CSF virus (CSFV) genomic material. Previously, we demonstrated that spleen swabs outperformed spleen homogenates for the detection of ASFV genomic material by RRT-PCR.

The Red River Jig is a traditional Métis dance practiced among Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples. While exercise improves physical health and fitness, the impacts of cultural dances on wholistic health are less clear. This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial (cultural and mental), social, physical function, and physical fitness benefits of a Red River Jig intervention.

Campylobacteriosis in human populations is an ongoing issue in both developed and developing countries. Poultry production is recognized as a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance and main source of human infection. : In this study, sixty-five isolates were cultured from fecal samples collected from 17 flocks of broiler chickens in Alberta, Canada over two years (2015-2016).

Partially linear models are commonly used in observational studies of the causal effect of treatment and/or exposure when there are observed confounding variables. The models are robust and asymptotically distribution-free for testing the causal null hypothesis. In this research, we investigate methods for estimating the partially linear models with data missing at random in all the variables, including the response, the treatment, and the confounding variables.

is a commensal and opportunistic pathogen increasingly recognized for its antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and zoonotic potential. This study employs whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to characterize isolates from retail meat samples, focusing on antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), virulence determinants, mobile genetic elements, and phylogenomic relationships. Fifty raw meat samples, including chicken ( = 18), beef ( = 17), and turkey ( = 15), were collected from retail markets in Akungba-Akoko, Nigeria.

Driving cessation is an expected eventuality in dementia care that has significant consequences for people with dementia (PWD) and care partners (CPs) alike. In collaboration with the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, we explored CPs' experiences of the driving cessation process. Using an online survey including closed- and open-ended questions, we collected data from 44 CPs of current drivers and from 207 CPs of former drivers.

BackgroundEvidence to guide multiple sclerosis (MS) rehabilitation and symptomatic care has grown, yet suboptimal access to care persists and uptake of evidence-based information is limited in practice. The movement of evidence into routine clinical care is not a spontaneous or linear process. Effective knowledge mobilization strategies may enhance equitable access to evidenced-based comprehensive MS care.

Aims: In radical prostatectomy (RP), Grade Group (GG) 4/5 prostate cancer [high-grade prostate cancer (HGPC) hereafter] is often associated with extension beyond the prostate and positive surgical margins. Hence, there is limited information on post-RP outcomes of patients with completely resected HGPC confined to the prostate (pT2).
Materials And Methods: Clinical outcomes were assessed in a cohort of patients with pT2 HGPC and negative surgical margins using Kaplan-Meier statistics and Cox regression analysis.

Study Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)-related hypoxemia, measured by hypoxic burden (HB), is associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). OSA-related autonomic response may also be associated with CKD. This study examined whether individuals with high HB and varying autonomic responses to OSA have a different risk of CKD progression compared to those with low HB.

Rationale: Individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at increased risk of cognitive impairment. However, the physiologic mechanisms that link OSA to this impairment are unclear. We assessed the association between novel physiologic biomarkers (, respiratory event-related electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and autonomic responses) and the risk of cognitive impairment.

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) are a class of novel psychoactive substances whose prevalence in illegal markets continues to grow. Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary intoxicating compound present in cannabis and is well-known to behave as a partial agonist at both the type 1 and 2 cannabinoid receptors (CB1R, CB2R). Unlike THC, the SCRAs characterized to date generally behave as CB1R and/or CB2R full agonists.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli causes septicemia in broiler chickens leading to high mortality and economic losses. Current diagnostic methods, such as serology and culture, cannot detect infections during early asymptomatic stages. Hence, this study focused on identifying novel serum metabolic biomarkers and pathways as an early detection prediction tool.

The escalating challenge of resistance to insecticides among agricultural and public health pests poses a significant threat to global food security and vector-borne disease control. This review synthesizes current understanding of the molecular mechanisms underpinning resistance, including well-characterized pathways such as target-site mutations affecting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs), and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, and metabolic detoxification mediated by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs), esterases, and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). Emerging resistance mechanisms are also explored, including protein sequestration by odorant-binding proteins and post-transcriptional regulation via non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs).

Herpesviruses are ubiquitous pathogens that cause a wide range of disease. Upon nuclear entry, their genomes associate with histones and chromatin modifying enzymes that regulate the progression of viral transcription and outcome of infection. While the composition and modification of viral chromatin has been extensively studied on bulk populations of infected cells by chromatin immunoprecipitation, this key regulatory process remains poorly defined at single-genome resolution.

Objectives: To describe the performance of the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) examination in individuals with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) and nontraumatic spinal cord injury (NTSCI) across Canadian acute and rehabilitation facilities, evaluating timing, completeness, and classification accuracy.
Methods: Using the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry (2015-2022), participants were analyzed across 6 cohorts: (A) TSCI-acute-admission ( = 4461), (B) TSCI-acute-discharge ( = 972), (C) TSCI-rehabilitation-admission ( = 2673), (D) TSCI-rehabilitation-discharge = 2316), (E) NTSCI-rehabilitation-admission ( = 728), and (F) NTSCI-rehabilitation-discharge = 619). ISNCSCI data included performed (yes/no), timing (≤72 hours, ≤7 days, and >7 days of admission/discharge), completeness, missing items, and worksheet used (yes/no).

Many per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are associated with increased health risks, and there is growing interest in the role of PFASs in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus (DM) in particular. This review summarizes the effects of PFASs on DM in pregnancy, adolescence, and adulthood, focusing on their roles in the regulation of glucose homeostasis, pregnancy outcomes, offspring development and glucolipid metabolism. Existing mechanisms suggest that PFASs contribute to DM by promoting glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, decreasing glycogen reserves, regulating insulin sensitivity, and inhibiting insulin secretion.

The areca nut (AN) is chewed by approximately 600 million people worldwide. Among AN chewers, ~5% develop oral submucosal fibrosis (OSF), a progressive fibrotic disorder of the oral cavity. OSF is characterized by subepithelial fibrosis and mucosal rigidity, leading to restricted mouth opening, difficulty in mastication, deglutition, and speech.
