Endocrine disrupting effects of contaminants on communication and behaviors of insects: from molecular effect to ecological consequences.

Curr Opin Insect Sci

September 2025

Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark, 5230 Odense M, Denmark; MIVEGEC, University of Montpellier CNRS IRD, Centre IRD, Montpellier, France.

An increasing number of studies have highlighted the insidious effects of endocrine disruptors on insect endocrinology, development, and behavior, prompting concerns regarding the ecological consequences of these pollutants. This review explores the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on insect communication and behavior, focusing on the molecular mechanisms and ecological consequences. This study underscores the importance of addressing EDC risks in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

Purpose: obstructive sleep apnea is underdiagnosed due to limited access to polysomnography (PSG). We aimed to assess the performances of Apneal, an application recording sound and movements thanks to a smartphone's microphone, accelerometer and gyroscope, to estimate patients' apnea-hypopnea index (AHI).

Methods: monocentric proof-of-concept study with a first manual scoring step, then automatic detection of respiratory events from recorded signals using a sequential deep-learning model (version 0.

Glycogen storage disease type II (GSDII), or Pompe disease, is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder characterized by the deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA). GAA deficiency results in the progressive accumulation of glycogen in cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues, leading to cellular dysfunction and clinical manifestations, including muscle weakness, respiratory difficulties, and cardiomyopathy. In this study, we report the derivation of three induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of GSDII patients.

A new staging system for hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis in the era of specific amyloidosis therapies.

ESC Heart Fail

September 2025

French Referral Centre for Cardiac Amyloidosis, GRC Amyloid Research Institute, Amyloidosis Mondor Network, Henri-Mondor Teaching Hospital, AP-HP, Creteil, France.

Objectives: Currently, there are two prognosis staging systems validated for transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR). We sought to develop a new staging system dedicated to hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) patients on specific treatments.

Methods And Results: A total of 258 patients diagnosed with ATTRv from two cardiac amyloidosis reference centres in France and Romania were stratified into three disease stages based on NT-proBNP, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and global longitudinal strain (GLS).

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms into pathology practice presents both opportunities and challenges. Although it can improve accuracy and inter-rater reliability, it is not infallible and can produce erroneous diagnoses, hence the need for pathologists to always check predictions. This critical judgment is particularly important when algorithm errors could lead to high-impact negative clinical outcomes, such as missing an invasive carcinoma.

Follicular helper T-cell lymphomas (TFHL) of the angioimmunoblastic type (AITL) and other TFHL variants often contain EBV-positive B-blasts, but EBV infection of the neoplastic T-cells has rarely been documented. Here, we report 10 cases of TFHL (9 AITLs and 1 TFHL NOS) associated with EBV infection in neoplastic T cells. The patients (5 males, 5 females), 56-81 years old, presented with polyadenopathy (8/8), B symptoms (7/7), and skin lesions (4/7).

NeuroPsychologie Interventionnelle, Département d'Etudes Cognitives, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris Sciences et Lettres University, Paris, France.

Introduction: Psychiatric disorders and difficulties in emotional expression represent a major problem in the management of Huntington's Disease (HD). To improve patient follow-up, we propose to investigate the link between emotional expression and psychiatric symptoms, measured by the Problem Behaviors Assessment (PBA) scale. To this aim we developed the first emotional/psychiatric speech corpus, emoHD.

Background: To date, tools evaluating the impact of skin diseases on quality of life have investigated short-term impact, overlooking the long-term effects on important life decisions.

Objective: to create and validate the "Dermatology Long-Term Life Impact Measure (DLLIM)" questionnaire, that assesses the impact of six chronic inflammatory skin diseases on an individual's life decisions METHODS: Following COSMIN guidelines, we developed and validated DLLIM through item refinement and psychometric testing in a sample of 16,727 patients with chronic skin diseases. Factorial and construct validity were assessed, alongside internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is a poxvirus endemic to Central and West Africa with high epidemic potential. Poxviruses enter host cells via a conserved entry-fusion complex (EFC), which mediates viral fusion to the cell membrane. The EFC is a promising therapeutic target, but the absence of structural data has limited the development of fusion-inhibiting treatments.

Parasites can influence host physiology and behavior, often impairing cognition. We investigated how infection and parasite load affect olfactory learning and memory in the paper wasp Polistes dominula workers parasitized by the insect parasite Xenos vesparum (Strepsiptera). We adapted a Pavlovian conditioning assay based on the proboscis extension reflex protocol.

This study investigates the determinants of oxygen consumption in transport ventilators, a critical factor for patient safety, especially during long-distance transfers and in resource-limited settings. A bench study was conducted on 4 ventilators to measure oxygen consumption under various ventilation settings. The main factor influencing oxygen consumption was the bias flow, a specific flow not contributing to patient ventilation.

Background And Aims: Severe alcoholic hepatitis is characterized by an increased risk of infections. Polymorphisms in immune response-related genes may influence susceptibility to infections in alcoholic hepatitis. This study aimed to investigate the association between two clusters of differentiation 14's (CD14) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs2569190 and rs5744455, and the occurrence of infections in severe alcoholic hepatitis, the response to corticotherapy and the mortality rates at one and three months.

The respiratory tract is the primary entry point for inhaled particles from anthropogenic or biological origin such as respiratory viruses. Ambient particulate matter (PM) has adverse effects on the respiratory tract through mechanisms eliciting inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, and other pathophysiological effects. At the same time, respiratory viruses cause a range of infections.

Does hemiparetic dorsiflexion in swing phase depend on spasticity?

J Electromyogr Kinesiol

August 2025

Laboratoire Analyse et Restauration du Mouvement (ARM), Hôpitaux Universitaires Henri Mondor, AP-HP, Créteil, France; Laboratoire de Biomécanique FORME, Annecy, France.

Objective: This study quantified dorsiflexor and plantar flexor (PF) spasticity, and agonist and antagonist recruitment (cocontractions) during the swing phase of gait in individuals with hemiparesis with and without prior tibial neurotomy, investigating the role of spastic cocontraction versus spasticity in limiting dorsiflexion (DF).

Methods: Eleven hemiparetic subjects and 11 controls walking at comfortable and slow velocities underwent kinematic and electromyographic (EMG) analysis of PF and DF muscles. Five of the hemiparetic subjects had undergone tibial nerve neurotomy, which eliminates PF spasticity.
