Uremic polyserositis is a rare and often underdiagnosed manifestation of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), typically characterized by concurrent or sequential inflammation of multiple serosal membranes. We report a diagnostically challenging case of a 40-year-old woman with ESRD on intermittent hemodialysis who presented with dyspnea following a missed dialysis session. Imaging revealed bilateral pleural effusions, a moderate-to-large pericardial effusion, and ascites.

Amber Thurman, Candi Miller, Porsha Ngumezi, Josseli Barnica, and Neveah Crain highlight the tragic outcomes of restrictive abortion bans post-Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Their stories underscore the need to shift away from viewing medical institutions as the only sources of reproductive care.

Introduction: Cutaneous manifestations in adult-onset immunodeficiency (AOID) resulting from anti-interferon-gamma autoantibody (AIGA) are prevalent and can be classified into infective and reactive disorders. To date, no clinical studies have specifically examined pustular reaction in patients with AOID. This study aimed to provide an original characterization of the clinical manifestations associated with pustular reaction in AOID and to compare these features with those observed in a clinically similar entity, generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP).

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative condition. Synaptic dysfunctions are associated with the onset and progressive neurodegeneration exhibited in PD. Healthy, active synapses are a prerequisite for non-pathological neurotransmission.

Background: An accessory navicular is a supernumerary ossicle located medial to the navicular bone, typically within the substance or insertion of the posterior tibial tendon, and can be a source of pain and dysfunction in active individuals.

Methods: This was a retrospective comparative study evaluating the outcomes of the modified Kidner procedure in athletes (ballet, basketball, volleyball, running, football, soccer, etc) and nonathletes. Our study included 42 consecutive feet that were operatively managed with the modified Kidner procedure for a symptomatic accessory navicular between the years 2014 and 2023.

Membrane proteins are essential bio-macromolecules involved in numerous critical biological processes and serve as therapeutic targets for a wide range of modern pharmaceuticals. Small amphipathic molecules, called detergents or surfactants, are widely used for the isolation and structural characterization of these proteins. A key requirement for such studies is their ability to maintain membrane protein stability in aqueous solution, a task where conventional detergents often fall short.

Response surface optimization of anaerobic self-forming dynamic membrane (AnSFDM) formation: Dominant parameter, interaction relationship and experimental evidence.

J Environ Manage

September 2025

Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Water Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, Shandong Key Laboratory of Environmental Processes and Health, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Shandong University, Qingdao, 266237, China. Electronic address:

Anaerobic self-forming dynamic membrane (AnSFDM) bioreactors have attracted increasing attention owing to their cost-effectiveness and lower carbon footprint. AnSFDM formation is the initial process of their operation and of pivotal importance for determining the basic characteristics of AnSFDMs. Nevertheless, the effect of operational parameters on the AnSFDM formation process has not been studied in a systematical and quantitative manner.

Objective: Communication skills assessment (CSA) is essential for ensuring competency, guiding educational practices and safeguarding regulatory compliance in health professions education (HPE). However, there appears to be heterogeneity in the reporting of validity evidence from CSA methods across the health profession that complicates our interpretation of the quality of assessment methods. Our objective was to map reliability and validity evidence from scores of CSA methods that have been reported in HPE.

Scaphotrapeziotrapezoid arthrodesis is a controversial surgical procedure for wrist disorders and its biomechanical effect remains unclear. This study investigated scaphotrapeziotrapezoid fusion based on a previously validated whole-wrist finite element model to simulate arthrodesis by creating a unified bone complex from the three bones (scaphoid, trapezium and trapezoid) in the joint. The model was analysed under physiological grasping loads to examine axial load distributions and articular contact pressures at the radioscaphoid and radiolunate interfaces.

Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) is an alternative to oral anticoagulation for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (AF), especially in patients at high bleeding risk. While generally safe, LAAO involves procedural and postprocedural risks. The most serious complication is pericardial effusion or tamponade; other periprocedural risks include stroke, device embolization, vascular injury, major bleeding, and air embolism.

Near-infrared (NIR) emitting materials underpin emerging medical diagnostics and therapeutic bionanotechnologies. Conjugated polymer nanoparticles offer unique advantages due to their remarkable absorption cross-sections, photostability, synthetic tunability, and biocompatibility. Despite the vast library of NIR-absorbing conjugated polymers, relatively few narrow bandgap structures have been explored for NIR imaging.

Theory predicts that high population density leads to more strongly connected spatial and social networks, but how local density drives individuals' positions within their networks is unclear. This gap reduces our ability to understand and predict density-dependent processes. Here we show that density drives greater network connectedness at the scale of individuals within wild animal populations.

This experiment evaluated the effects of increasing MitoQ concentrations in semen extender on post-thaw quality of Holstein bull sperm, including motility, membrane integrity, antioxidant status and viability. Semen samples were collected, pooled and diluted with extender containing 0 (control), 5, 50, 500 and 1000 nM of MitoQ and frozen through the standard procedure. An increase in MitoQ supplementation positively influenced total and progressive motility, as well as average path velocity; however, these effects were not statistically significant until the concentration reached 50 nM.

Shifting climate regimes are projected to increase the area of xeric regions and result in more pronounced intermittency across river networks. Given these projected changes, we aim to understand the factors contributing to species persistence under increasing aridity. To investigate how changing flow regimes are related to changes in fish richness and assemblage composition, we compiled data from 1473 xeric stream sites in the United States and Australia.

Voltage-dependent anion channel 1 is an integral outer membrane protein of the mitochondria that governs apoptosis, enables metabolite exchange, and influences mitochondrial activity. In neurodegenerative diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and Alzheimer's disease, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction are frequent features. Voltage-dependent anion channel 1 is a key regulator of these processes.
