Foodborne outbreaks and recalls within the tree fruit industry are making producers re-evaluate appropriate cleaning and sanitation practices during harvesting. Without effective sanitation, bacteria can create niches and form biofilms. This study evaluated the efficacy of silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC) and chlorine dioxide (ClO) gas to control Escherichia coli and Listeria innocua on experimentally inoculated harvesting equipment at commercial apple packinghouses within the Midwest and Pacific Northwest regions.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/polymer composite electrolytes have garnered worldwide attention because of their outstanding performance in energy-related applications. Here, a highly lithiated MOF (LZM) is designed as a filler into poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). LZM is synthesized through a postsynthetic modified strategy to obtain preeminent single-ion conducting performance.

Great Plains American Indians living in reservation communities suffer some of the highest mortality disparities in the US, but culture-centric palliative care can ease the burdens of serious illness and improve end-of-life decision-making. Common misunderstandings about palliative care, as well as historical and cultural barriers, stand as obstacles to its widespread use. Therefore, the aims of this interdisciplinary report (American Indian and non-American Indian researchers) are to share results from reservation community Talking Circles used to guide the design of a culture-centric message to promote and educate about palliative care within three Great Plains Tribal communities.

Metabolic availability (MA) of amino acids (AA) in feedstuffs has been assessed in pigs and humans using the indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) method. Our lab previously reported higher methionine (Met) content but lower MA in chicken meal (ChM) as compared to peas. However, the MA of met in peas or ChM were not quantified due to the absence of a crystalline AA reference diet, assumed to have 100% MA.

Respiratory viral diseases infecting poultry lead to variable lesions in the respiratory organs, including nasal sinuses, trachea, lungs, and air sacs. Additional involvement of eyelids/conjunctiva was reported. The distribution and the intensity of lesions depend on multiple factors, including virulence, the host's immunity, and secondary or concurrent infections.

Interferon-induced transmembrane protein 3 (IFITM3) is a member of the family of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that inhibits a diverse array of enveloped viruses which enter host cells by endocytosis. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an enveloped RNA virus causing significant economic losses to the swine industry. Very little is known regarding how IFITM3 restricts PRRSV.

Greater perceived control is often associated with better responses to life's stressors. One reason for this link may be that greater perceived control is related to the ability to resolve these stressful experiences. Using longitudinal data from the National Study of Daily Experiences (N = 1766, Mage = 56.

Plants emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in response to biotic and abiotic stress, serving as early indicators of health. Among them, ()-2-Hexenal─a key green leaf volatile (GLV)─signals stress from pathogen infection or herbivory. Real-time detection of ()-2-hexenal at trace levels is crucial for early diagnosis, crop protection, and environmental sustainability.

Animal health, well-being, and productivity are directly impacted by environmental extremes. The outdoor environment in which minimal excess energy requirements are used to maintain body temperature is often referred to as the thermoneutral zone. The following will highlight monitoring environmental conditions to access animal comfort, followed by recommended management practices to reduce environmental stressors and improve comfort during environmental extremes.

Background: Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a destructive fungal disease affecting wheat and barley, leading to significant yield losses and reduced grain quality. Susceptibility to FHB is influenced by genetic factors, environmental conditions, and genotype-by-environment interactions (GxE), making it challenging to predict disease resistance across diverse environments. This study investigates GxE in a long-term spring wheat multi-environment uniform nursery trial focusing on the evaluation of resistant lines in northern US breeding programs.

Membranes require continuous reorganization of lipid components, including sterols, to dynamically alter their rigidity to deform and bend during scission events which occur during fundamental cellular functions such as endocytosis. While diseases of cholesterol biosynthesis result in reduced cellular cholesterol and accumulation of precursor sterols, limited studies have addressed the intracellular consequences of disease-associated sterol changes on the ability of eukaryotic cellular membranes to function and signal normally. Here, we utilized bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) to investigate how altered sterol content impacts macrophage signaling and membrane function.

Background: Rural residents face many health disparities and challenges. Rural health networks form to address the specific needs of a community by bringing together multiple individuals and organisations; however, there is limited literature on the evaluation of these networks.
Objective: To evaluate a network's effectiveness in three areas: (1) capacity to achieve change in palliative care education, (2) key results of collaborative efforts, and (3) extent to which grant activities were implemented.

Cyanide exerts its toxic effects primarily by inhibiting mitochondrial Complex IV (Cytochrome c oxidase, CCOx). Recent studies have shown that mammalian cells can endogenously produce cyanide from glycine via a lysosomal pathway. At low concentrations, cyanide may play regulatory roles, but at higher levels, it causes metabolic inhibition.

Background: CYP2D6 affects metabolism of several opioids; however, the clinical impact of genetic variants on efficacy has limited evidence in large patient populations.
Objective: This study aims to assess the impact of CYP2D6 phenotype on pain response in an elective pharmacogenomic (PGx) screening population prescribed opioids.
Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on hospitalized patients with CYP2D6 genotyping, prescribed either codeine, tramadol, hydrocodone, or oxycodone within 24 months prior to PGx testing and through 36 months after results.
Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) has evolved dramatically from basic monitoring systems to sophisticated artificial intelligence(AI)-driven decision support systems that enhance livestock management efficiency, sustainability, and animal welfare. This review examines the technological evolution of PLF since 2017, highlighting significant advancements in sensing technologies, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. Non-invasive technologies, including RGB-D cameras, 3D imaging systems, and IoT-enabled platforms, now capture detailed biometric and behavioral data in real time, while AI algorithms enable early disease detection, optimize feeding strategies, and improve reproductive management.

The effects of germination on pea composition have been established. However, the effects of germination on the nutritional profile of different pea varieties have not been extensively reported. Therefore, five varieties (Passion, Greenwood, Durwood, Agassiz, and Treasure) of peas were germinated for up to six days, and their nutrient profiles, protein digestibility, in vitro protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (IV-PDCAAS), and antioxidant activity (DPPH) were determined.

Young beef bulls are often fed high-energy diets to maximize post-weaning growth; however, overnutrition has been associated with decreased semen quality. Seminal plasma has been shown to prime the uterus for early pregnancy events in mammalian species, thus alterations in this response caused by overnutrition could be detrimental or beneficial. The present study evaluated the impact of seminal plasma from bulls exposed to overnutrition on the transcriptome of endometrial epithelial cells in vitro.
