Myotonia congenita is a hereditary, non-dystrophic skeletal muscle disorder associated with muscle stiffness due to delayed muscle relaxation after contraction. We review myotonia congenita in domesticated animals and humans and investigated suspected myotonia congenita in a flock of Merino sheep in Australia. In 2020, a property in New South Wales reported a four-year history of lambs that would fall on disturbance before rapidly recovering, with 13 affected sheep identified in 2020.

Viroids occur in plants as swarms of sequence variants clustered around a dominant variant, leading to adoption of the term 'quasispecies' to describe the viroid population in an individual host. The composition of the quasispecies can potentially change according to the age of the infection, the position of the leaf or branch in the canopy, and the host species. Lissencephaly and cerebellar hypoplasia (LCH) represents a spectrum of congenital developmental malformations of the cerebral cortex and cerebellum, mostly occurring as inherited conditions caused by variants in an increasingly recognized number of genes. LCH has been identified in three Dorset-cross lambs with congenital neurological signs in Australia. Lambs were unable to walk and had reduced vision, and one lamb developed a hypermetric gait and intention tremors.

In 2022, a genotype IV (GIV) strain of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) caused an unprecedented and widespread outbreak of disease in pigs and humans in Australia. As no veterinary vaccines against JEV are approved in Australia and all current approved human and veterinary vaccines are derived from genotype (G) III JEV strains, we used the recently described insect-specific Binjari virus (BinJV) chimeric flavivirus vaccine technology to produce a JEV GIV vaccine candidate. Herein we describe the production of a chimeric virus displaying the structural prM and E proteins of a JEV GIV isolate obtained from a stillborn piglet (JEV) in the genomic backbone of BinJV (BinJ/JEVprME).

Pinkeye is a highly contagious disease of goats with different aetiologies.
