Aims: Our review aimed to determine the prevalence of - and factors associated with - hearing loss, oral and olfactory disease, frozen shoulder, trigger finger, and hair loss in young adults with type 1 diabetes. These conditions were selected based on research team interests, existing literature, and group discussion.

Methods: We conducted a quantitative narrative review using a systematic process to identify cohort and cross-sectional studies involving young adults with type 1 diabetes (mean age 18-30 years).

Mepolizumab treatment and reduced oral corticosteroid exposure improves symptoms of depression and anxiety in severe eosinophilic asthma: data from the Australian Mepolizumab Registry.

Respir Med

September 2025

Centre of Excellence in Treatable Traits, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, University of Newcastle, New Lambton Heights, NSW, Australia; Asthma and Breathing Research Program, Hunter Medical Research Institute, New Lambton Heights, NSW, Australia; Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medici

Background: The benefits of oral corticosteroid (OCS) stewardship approaches -including monoclonal antibody treatments for severe asthma- on reducing toxic OCS exposure and related comorbidities such as depression and anxiety require real-world evaluation.

Methods: This real-world observational study investigated OCS exposure and associated complications over 24 months in patients enrolled in the Australian Mepolizumab Registry (n=412).

Results: Patients were median age 59 years, 58% were female.

Objectives: This study aimed to achieve wider consensus on the relevance and feasibility of the Quality Equity and Systems Transformation in Primary Health Care (QUEST-PHC) indicators and measures developed for Australian general practice.

Methods: Partnering with eight Primary Health Networks (PHNs) across four states, we conducted a Delphi consensus study consisting of three rounds of online survey with general practice experts including general practitioners, practice nurses and PHN staff members. Participants rated each measure for relevance and feasibility, and provided input into the implementation of a quality indicator tool.

Background: Pest fruit flies commonly carry diverse RNA viruses with unknown host effects that may affect pest management strategies. We investigated effects of horizontally transmitted cripavirus and vertically transmitted iflavirus in Queensland fruit fly that also carried orbivirus, toti-like virus and xinmovirus as persistent covert infections.

Results: Individuals persistently infected with these five viruses had slower egg-to-pupa development, lower emergence and lower adult survival under stress than individuals without cripavirus and iflavirus, but persistently infected with the other three viruses.

While research suggests that playing musical instruments promotes neuroplasticity in professional musicians, it remains unclear whether lifelong music experience benefits brain health in non-professional musicians. This study examined whether playing a musical instrument across the lifespan is associated with (a) altered grey matter (GM) density and (b) neuropsychological functioning in older adults at risk for dementia. Sixty-one individuals aged ≥ 50 years were recruited from a memory clinic.

Australians living in rural communities are more likely to experience Domestic violence (DV) than those living in urban areas. Service providers (SP) who provide support to victims of DV in these rural settings encounter some structural barriers at a systems and organizational level that may be useful in improving outreach services. However, few studies have explored SP perspectives surrounding these issues.

Corticomotor Responses to Experimental, Acute, and Chronic Lower Limb Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Brain Behav

September 2025

Brain Stimulation and Rehabilitation (BrainStAR) Lab, School of Health Sciences, Western Sydney University, Western Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Background: Corticomotor adaptations are believed to contribute to persistent pain. However, prior reviews have lacked sufficient data to adequately explore these adaptations in lower limb pain. This restricts the generalizability of existing research given the distinct functional and neurophysiological differences between upper and lower limb musculature.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) is an emerging intervention in psychiatry, for which there is preliminary evidence for effectiveness in eating disorders (EDs). The subjective psychedelic experience is considered an important driver of positive outcomes following PAT; however, conventional study design approaches often overlook many of the nuances inherent to the experience. Consequently, considerable information is lost between the first-person account and its scientific interpretation and documentation.

Global vegetation growth is thought to be limited by nitrogen (N) more than by other nutrients. Here we document a stronger phosphorus (P) limitation on global photosynthesis compared with N over the last four decades. On the basis of more than 80,000 field observations of foliar nutrients and a machine learning method, we generated a long-term global dataset of foliar N and P concentrations for the period 1980-2017.

A qualitative study exploring influencers on metropolitan and regional physiotherapy practice in prostate cancer.

Physiotherapy

June 2025

Faculty of Health/Clinical Research Rehabilitation and Translation Research Group (CRRT), Faculty of Health, University of Canberra, 11 Kirinari Street, Bruce, Australian Capital Territory 2617, Australia. Electronic address:

Physiotherapists play a crucial role in managing symptoms that can arise from treatments for prostate cancer. Despite the benefits, limited evidence exists on physiotherapists' self-perceived capabilities, enablers, and barriers in service provision. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach to explore the experiences of physiotherapists providing supportive care to patients with prostate cancer in metropolitan and regional Victoria, Australia.

Introduction: Ayahuasca is a psychedelic compound of N, N, Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and harmala alkaloids used for spiritual and medicinal applications in traditional settings. A range of potential psychotherapeutic mechanisms have been proposed for ayahuasca. These are thought to contribute to improvements in various psychiatric conditions including mood disorders and substance dependence.

The vocalisations of female songbirds are more complex, widespread, and functionally important than previously thought; yet information is still depauperate compared to that of males. Here we provide the first recordings and analysis of the vocal behaviour of female Albert's lyrebirds, a species in which males are known for elaborate song and dance displays involving vocal mimicry. We document one female Albert's lyrebird vocalising during nest construction and another vocalising at a nest containing a nestling and find that, like males, female Albert's lyrebirds produce vocal mimicry, conspecific song, and alarm calls.

Background And Aims: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and dementia represent two of the most pressing global health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While vascular pathology is increasingly recognized as a contributor to cognitive decline, few studies have systematically explored the global association between CVD and dementia using standardized, population-level data. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between CVD and dementia incidence across 204 countries, stratified by economic status, development level, and geographic region.

Understanding variation in plant assimilation-temperature (AT) responses is essential for improving forecasts of climate change feedbacks and their impacts on the biosphere. Previous studies have focused on acclimation to weather or adaptation to climate of origin, but relationships between AT response parameters and leaf functional traits or phylogeny have received little attention. To evaluate the influence of climate, traits, and phylogeny on AT response, we used the new Fast Assimilation-Temperature Response (FAsTeR) gas exchange method to measure 243 AT response curves in 102 species from 96 families grown in a common garden.

Background: Hip fractures are common in older people and are associated with high perioperative mortality. Prompt surgical intervention within the first 48 h of fraction reduces complications; however, surgical urgency often precludes a comprehensive preoperative cardiac evaluation. Preliminary data suggests that performing a focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) before surgery may reduce postoperative complications.
