Prion-like spread of disease-specific tau conformers is a hallmark of all tauopathies. A 19-residue probe peptide containing a P301L mutation and spanning the R2/R3 splice junction of tau folds and stacks into seeding-competent fibrils and induces aggregation of 4R, but not 3R tau. These tau peptide fibrils propagate aggregated intracellular tau over multiple generations, have a high β-sheet content, a colocalized lipid signal, and adopt a well-defined U-shaped fold found in 4R tauopathy brain-derived fibrils.

Visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease can be viewed from a systems-level perspective, whereby dysfunctional communication between brain networks responsible for perception predisposes a person to hallucinate. To this end, abnormal functional interactions between higher-order and primary sensory networks have been implicated in the pathophysiology of visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease, however the precise signatures remain to be determined. Dimensionality reduction techniques offer a novel means for simplifying the interpretation of multidimensional brain imaging data, identifying hierarchical patterns in the data that are driven by both within- and between-functional network changes.

In this Perspective review, we highlight some of the less explored aspects of lateral habenula (LHb) function in contextual memory, sleep, and behavioral flexibility. We provide evidence that LHb is well-situated to integrate different internal state and multimodal sensory information from memory-, stress-, motivational-, and reward-related circuits essential for both survival and decision making. We further discuss the impact of early life stress (ELS) on LHb function as an example of stress-induced hyperactivity and dysregulation of neuromodulatory systems within the LHb that promote anhedonia and motivational deficits following ELS.

Organic molecules are prime targets in the search for life on other planetary bodies in the Solar System. Understanding their preservation potential and detectability after ionic irradiation, with fluences potentially representing those received for several millions to billions of years at Mars or in interplanetary space, is a crucial goal for astrobiology research. We recently demonstrated that perinatal exposure to the glutamate-related herbicide, glufosinate ammonium, has deleterious effects on neural stem cell (NSC) homeostasis within the sub-ventricular zone (SVZ), probably leading to ASD-like symptoms in offspring later in life. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether perinatal exposure to another glutamate-related toxicant, the cyanobacterial amino acid β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), might also trigger neurodevelopmental disturbances. With this aim, female mice were intranasally exposed to low doses of BMAA, 50 mg kg three times a week from embryonic days 7-10 to postnatal day 21.

A 2-step experimental design was employed in the present study on juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus): 1) juveniles were exposed for 26 d to 2 contaminated sediments and a reference one, and 2) they were transferred in clean seawater with clean sediment for 35 d, feeding fish once a day, twice a week, or once a week. Fish exposed to contaminated sediments presented a significant increase of hepatic Cd, Cu, and Pb concentrations compared with the reference condition after the 26-d exposure. Higher fluorescence signals of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolites were found in bile from turbot exposed to contaminated sediments for 26 d compared with reference.
