Article Abstract

Introduction: Mold-derived contamination in cigar tobacco leaves causes severe economic losses and health risks due to mycotoxin production. This study aimed to identify early-warning biomarkers for mold and elucidate their interaction with fungal communities.

Method: Gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) combined with high-throughput sequencing was employed to profile volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fungal communities during artificial molding.

Results: A total of 72 VOCs were detected, with four compounds (2-methyl-1-butanol-M, 2-methyl-1-butanol-D, 2-propanone, and 1-penten-3-ol) identified as early-warning biomarkers through VIP > 1 and < 0.05, showing 1.31.5-fold increases in early mold stages (MB3). Furthermore, fungal diversity sharply declined post-molding (OTUs reduced by 85.7%), with Aspergillus dominating (>99.45% abundance), and exhibiting strong positive correlations with 1-penten-3-ol (ρ = 0.61) and benzaldehyde-M (ρ = 0.67).

Discussion: These findings provide actionable biomarkers for industrial mold prevention and insights into fungal-VOC interaction, with implications for perishable crop storage.

The application of metabolomics to the water quality monitoring system, biological early warning system (BEWS), has been proposed; however, its development has not been attempted due to challenges such as high inter-individual variability and invasive sampling requirements in metabolomics applications. In this study, we employed an extracellular metabolomics (exo-metabolomics) approach using Daphnia magna to overcome these limitations and evaluate its utility in field river water conditions. From BEWS flow-through chambers, we collected exo-metabolites under ambient, copper exposure (0-80 μg/L), and post-exposure conditions.

Utilizing Causal Network Markers to Identify Tipping Points ahead of Critical Transition.

Early-warning signals of delicate design are used to predict critical transitions in complex systems, which makes it possible to render the systems far away from the catastrophic state by introducing timely interventions. Traditional signals including the dynamical network biomarker (DNB), based on statistical properties such as variance and autocorrelation of nodal dynamics, overlook directional interactions and thus have limitations in capturing underlying mechanisms and simultaneously sustaining robustness against noise perturbations. This study therefore introduces a framework of causal network markers (CNMs) by incorporating causality indicators, which reflect the directional influence between variables.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a critical condition with high mortality, arises from dysregulated inflammation and lung injury. While evidence-based supportive care remains foundational, the lack of effective targeted therapies underscores the need for novel approaches. This review focuses on the emerging role of intestinal microecology in ARDS pathogenesis the gut-lung axis.

Background: Global warming exacerbates heatstroke, increasing its severity and associated health risks, including fatal kidney damage. Predicting post-heatstroke organ injury remains difficult, delaying timely medical intervention. This study aims to identify potential blood biomarkers that reflect organ stress and recovery status following heatstroke.

IntroductionWhite blood cell count, a cost-effective blood test marker, is used extensively for the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. Nevertheless, its association with the progression and prognosis of acute kidney injury remains unclear.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted using data from a multicenter randomized trial on an acute kidney injury early warning system.
