Article Abstract

The persistent leaching of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from landfills poses significant environmental risks, particularly to surrounding water systems. However, information regarding the occurrence and fate of PFAS in landfills across the country is limited. Here we investigated the distribution profiles and sources of 60 PFAS in landfill leachate across 31 provinces in mainland of China, showing the total levels of ∑PFAS from 3.05 × 10 to 1.58 × 10 ng/L. Structural equation modeling revealed that socioeconomic conditions directly influenced the residue levels of PFAS in landfill leachate. Furthermore, these conditions, in conjunction with climatic factors, influenced the chemical composition of landfill leachate, thereby indirectly affecting the distribution of PFAS. The estimated ∑PFAS emission flux from landfill leachate in China was 419 kg/year, with ultrashort-chain congeners as the predominant, omnipresent congeners, accounting for 37%. Our study first provided comprehensive evidence to demonstrate landfills were important sources of PFAS in China, which would help to understand the ecological risks of emerging PFAS, especially for ultrashort-chain PFAS, and eventually promoting the conduction effective environmental monitoring and pollution control strategies for PFAS.

Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy to address water pollution caused by heavy metals and antibiotics. Zeolites exhibit significant potential in petrochemical catalysis; however, the development of zeolite-based photocatalysts remains a critical challenge for researchers. Herein, a novel Z-scheme heterojunction was designed and fabricated on the titanium-silicon zeolite TS-1 by modifying g-CN via a simple calcination process.

Pollution can have lasting effects beyond the exposure period, potentially impacting multiple generations. Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants are widespread, including in oceans, yet their multigenerational impacts remain poorly understood. We investigated whether BDE-99, a ubiquitous PBDE, induces neurobehavioral and molecular effects across generations in the fish .

The efficient and sustainable remediation of contaminated water calls for catalytic systems that must clean broadly, endure widely, and last repeatedly. In this regard, we report the development of sulfonate-functionalized core-shell hydrogel beads embedded with synthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that exhibit intrinsic oxidase-like activity without requiring external light or chemical oxidants. The sulfonate ligands modulate the surface electronic environment of the AuNPs, facilitating singlet oxygen generation via a nonplasmonic, radiationless mechanism.
